Today is July 22nd ! On July 22nd, 1887, Henry Harold Brookes published the first issue of the Panhandle Herald in Panhandle, Texas. Now the oldest continually published newspaper in all of the Texas Panhandle. This July 22nd 1982 issue from the Carson County Area Newspapers Collection celebrates the newspapers 95th birthday of the newspaper. Today in 2026 the Panhandle Herald reaches its 139th year of publication! You can check out this long-lasting newspaper and many others on the Portal to Texas History.

Don't forget that The Portal to Texas History is currently accepting applications for its 2025 Rescuing Texas History program.
Each award will provide up to $1,000 of digitization services to libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, private partners, and other groups that house historical or cultural heritage materials, as work in kind. All materials will be scanned at the UNT Libraries and hosted on The Portal to Texas History. Non-newspaper archival collections will be considered for digitization. The deadline for receipt of applications is August 7, 2025.
