Navigating a steep slope, the design balances a discreet street presence with dramatic views of the Austin skyline.

A circular concrete stair tower anchors the geometric rigor of the low, rectilinear composition. Staggered travertine blocks emphasize material honesty, providing privacy by day and a warm glow by night.

Once inside, the solid façade dissolves into floor-to-ceiling glass that hangs right off the cliff edge.

Formwork is finally removed at the stair tower! The wood grain texture left behind by the timber formliners gives the concrete surround a tactile, permanent quality.

Every site has a logic of its own. On this Zilker lot, a 15-foot grade drop, heritage live oaks, and neighboring homes did the organizing work before a single line was drawn.

The grade became terraces. The oaks provided privacy and shade. The massing responded to its neighbors. Texas brick and wood grounded the modern form in its regional context.

A home rooted in its environment, and shaped by the people who call it home.

A cantilevered volume frames the landscape while full-height glazing opens the interior to light and distant lake views.

"Small houses should be subtractive, not additive." Architect Scott Specht designed his own tiny home around that philosophy, and the result speaks for itself.
