Burnout recovery isn’t the same for every neurotype.
Recovery isn’t just about resting. It’s about understanding what depleted your energy in the first place so you can rebuild in a way that actually fits who you are.
This is Part 10 of my “ADHD vs Autism vs AuDHD” series. Part 1 of 2 on burnout covered burnout definitions. This video focuses on the first steps toward recovery.

We know burnout equals exhaustion. Yet ADHD burnout and autistic burnout develop differently.
Understanding burnout based on neurotype can help explain what is happening, but also support the first steps towards recovery.
This is the 8th part of my “ADHD vs Autism vs AuDHD” series. In this Part 1, I’ll cover burnout types. In Part 2, I’ll cover how recovery can look different depending on neurotype.

Being disabled doesn’t remove my privilege. Knowing my privilege is what helps my education and how I show up - even when it isn’t comfortable or easy. I hope if you’re late identified, low support needs autistic, you’re doing the same. Especially if you have additional societal benefits, like being white, male, and straight. We have so much we can learn when listening to a range of voices

This is a VERY general overview of the ADHD-autistic partnership and why attraction happens but also why conflicts can arise. I haven’t addressed this before because so many factors go into the dynamic, but I do get asked about it a lot. If you’re in this partnership, education about both neurotypes are important because it provides the backbone for communication.

Growing up undiagnosed autistic, I was taught that my meltdowns were one of the only times my emotions were taken seriously. But because my autistic meltdowns are loud and angry, they were also used to shame me. This should never be the case because I did use my words prior. They just weren’t heard.
If someone autistic tells you to listen to their words, listen. That’s what they mean.

Being late-diagnosed autistic, I learned how to look socially acceptable, mask as “I’m okay.” A doubled edge sword: I didn’t learn how to signal distress. So then I’m doubted when I say I’m not okay.
I tell people in my life now to believe my words. That’s my medium for how I’m feeling. I deserve to be heard. I deserved to be believed.

Most of us ADHDers hate opening up mail. But how glorious is it when we do, and there’s no next step? 🙌

For me, one of the hardest parts of being ADHD and autistic is knowing when enough detail is enough. My ADHD can go wide, my autism can go deep. The goal usually isn’t to build the perfect system. It’s to build just enough to keep moving.
