APA!'s CGC and Total Obedience Program are shelter based programs to help all the dogs learn basic obedience to help them find their forever homes!
A pilot program funded by Best Friends Animal Society. The last piece of our "no-kill" Austin is the large, rambunctious dog. Through training, diligence, and one-on-one care, dogs who would otherwise be the hardest to adopt — or even euthanized in other cities — are now becoming adoptable, highly trained pets with the Canine Good Citizen Ready Project.

And the prize for the 'Most Improved' goes to Chili and her dedicated trainer Ali!
We just kinda figured Chili was 'too stubborn' to learn how to do the basics like 'sit' and 'down.' Since she enjoys her trail walks so much, we were happy with that outlet.
Then Ali started working with Chili and we found out she just needed the right motivation and a friend to want to please! She know officially knows 'sit' and is working on 'down!' Go girls!!

One of our top goals of the Canine Good Citizen Read
y and Total Obedience Programs is to give YOU well trained dogs. Some doWgs are further in their training than others and some may just know a sit. e work hard to generalize these skills so anyone can ask the dog to show them off. At the very least, you get the basis of sit, down, walking on leash, polite behaviors around other dogs on leash, place and coming when called. Boy howdy, that's some hard work on behalf of our volunteers and staff!

Did you know we have some OG Total Obedience Program dogs in our midst? Monty has been a successful graduate of the program for years, and we rely on his skills to help him adjust back to the shelter. Monty is trail ready AND home ready!

We are back, baby!! It's been a little pause in our official Canine Good Citizen and Total Obedience Program training due to staffing and getting back in the groove. Thanks to our volunteer leads, the first six week course for our shelter dogs is in the books! Our volunteers and staff members are so excited to help our shelter pups shine, especially in their basic obedience. You want a well trained dog? We got 'em! Stay tuned as we fetured the THIRTY dogs enrolled in the program and some old favorites!

One of the benefits of APA!'s dogs getting regular training in the shelter is hitting the nearby Town Lake Trail! Because Eel has been acing on the basics, she can hit the trail and check in with her volunteer friend and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature even with other dogs nearby!

Monty has taken his skills just about everywhere-he's a volunteer favorite to take out on the trails! He's not phased by bikes, strollers, runners or other dogs. He sets the pace and sticks to it. Total Obedience Program skills aren't just for the shelter-the real world is agreat place to generalize!

While we filmed this video about three years ago, Carrie will always be the expert on the Total Obedience Program! She did create it afterall.
As a companion to our Canine Good Citizen training program, TOP was created because not all of our dogs, like Monty!, can officially pass the requirements of the CGC program. Instead, they get to modify some of the tests and get the bonus learning place!
