Why does third grade matter so much?

Up through third grade, children are learning to read—building the foundation of literacy. But starting in fourth grade, everything changes. Now they are expected to read to learn across every subject: science, math, history.

If a child is not reading on grade level by that point, they are no longer just behind in reading—
they are behind in everything.

Students who struggle with reading in third grade are four times more likely to leave high school without graduating.

And for many children already facing challenges, those odds are even greater.

What happens in third grade doesn’t just affect school—it shapes a child’s entire future.

We are stepping into a new chapter as a fully independent nonprofit organization—and we do so with deep gratitude for the faithful foundation that brought us here.

Education Connection was launched in 2009 through Hill Country Bible Church at Naumann Elementary in Leander ISD and expanded in 2015 through Christ Together Greater Austin as its Act of Service. What began as a shared vision among pastors and school leaders has grown into a regional movement focused on one goal:

…every student reading by the end of 3rd grade.

Today, we serve:
• 19 school districts
• 108 elementary schools
• 1,160 volunteers
• 2,563 students weekly

We are honored to carry this work forward and remain committed to collaborative impact across Central Texas.
