As with any great composition, whether fine art, manuscript, musical score, or work of architecture, the observer finds themselves being pulled into the narrative through harmonizing elements and cohesive transitions. CoXist’s Lakesong Retreat is no different. Frank and Megan Lin created just such an experience through carefully selected materials, intentional views, and interaction with the environment. Every component, from the floor-to-ceiling glazing to the handmade bricks, was chosen to create connection to the outdoors, and play a part in the story being told. Nestled among a grove of centuries-old live oaks is a home that sits so lightly on the land, it almost appears to be hovering. A little architectural ingenuity from Megan and Frank Lin rewarded the homeowners, a young professional couple, with an inspired house that feels at one with its setting. A series of pavilion-like structures surround a central courtyard and pool. We loved the entrance of the Garner Residence! The double-height entry vestibule beautifully blurs the boundary between the front courtyard and the backyard. The dynamic volume changes along the X, Y, and Z axes create an incredible sense of movement and depth.

The breeze block screen at the second-level catwalk not only offers stunning light play through the blocks but also ensures privacy at night.
