This was the Running Remote community gathering in Bali during our early years.

Different countries. Different companies. Different approaches to work.

One shared belief: where someone works shouldn't determine what they're capable of contributing.

The technology has changed enormously since these early conferences. The community has grown. And remote work itself has entered the mainstream
But bringing people together to learn from one another?

That's still at the heart of Running Remote.

Bali. Montreal. Lisbon. Austin. And many conversations in between.

When we look back at past Running Remote conferences, it's easy to focus on how much the world of work has changed.

But these photos remind us of something else.

Running Remote has always been about the people willing to share what they're learning.

Founders. Operators. People leaders. Researchers. Remote work pioneers. And a global community curious enough to keep questioning how work could be better.
The future of work keeps changing.

We're grateful to have spent all these years exploring it together.

Running Remote gathered in Indonesia to discuss how to build companies differently.

Remote work was still far from mainstream. For many organizations, hiring and operating across borders was an experiment rather than an established way of working.

Inside this room, though, the conversation had already moved on to the harder questions:

How do you scale it?
How do you build culture?
How do you lead when your team isn't in one place?

Eight years later, we're still asking those questions, just at a very different scale.

No office required.

Running Remote has moved around the world over the years, but the reason we gather hasn't changed:

To learn how to build organizations that give people the freedom to do great work from anywhere—and help leaders make that freedom sustainable.

Lisbon gave us a pretty incredible backdrop for it.

The remote work conversation changed almost overnight.

Before 2020, much of our focus was on helping organizations understand how remote work could work.

By Running Remote Montreal in 2022, the question had become:

What do we do with everything we've just learned?

Companies were navigating remote, hybrid, return-to-office, distributed hiring, new expectations from employees, and entirely new ways of leading teams.

There wasn't one answer.

So we brought together the people working through it.

Then came Lisbon 🇵🇹.

In 2023 and again in 2024, Running Remote brought the community to one of Europe's most beautiful cities.

By then, the question was no longer whether remote work could work.

The conversation had matured.

How do we make distributed organizations better?
How do we build stronger cultures?
How do we give people flexibility without losing connection?

And, as always, some of the best answers came from conversations outside the conference room.

After years of talking about connecting people remotely, 2022 reminded us just how valuable it is to meet in person.

Running Remote came to Montreal that May as the world was still emerging from the disruption and restrictions of the pandemic.

Work had changed dramatically.

Millions had experienced remote work for the first time, and leaders everywhere were trying to understand what came next.

So we got together and talked about it.

In person.

There was something particularly special about that one.

Behind every keynote, every panel, every connection, and every unforgettable moment ...

is a team that makes it all happen.

Running Remote is more than a conference. It's the result of months of planning, countless details, and a shared belief that the future of work deserves a place where people can learn from one another.
