The Scout Guide Austin

This week I’ve been reflecting on how much we’ve changed as a country in 25 years. When 9/11 happened I was at an elementary school in Charleston, SC. I clearly remember the boy sitting next to me as our teacher told us what happened saying “what does that mean?” and the tiny version of me saying “it means we’re going to war”. I can’t quite tell you how I knew that except that my parents regularly taught us about history, global events and the impact it has. Most importantly, they taught me that we should always be of service to others.

I think as a country we’re currently so divided we forget how to simply serve one another well. It doesn’t have to be as heroic as those who rushed into the building that day, but how amazing if it is.

It can be as simple as neighborly support and helpfulness. May we call a friend, offer a favor, hold a door, shop from people in our community, be slower to make assumptions and quicker to expect the best to happen. Even in the darkness, there is always light.

So today, I invite you to join me in watching as they read all 3,000 names at ground zero. They’re all still people, community members and individual lives that are worth calling out by name.

While we love being local to Austin, the memory of today makes us all kinda feel like New Yorkers 🤞
