It's barbecue season!
in 1961, then-Vice President Johnson hosted a barbecue for Pakistani leader Muhammad Ayub Khan and more than 500 visitors at the LBJ Ranch. The Vice President enjoyed welcoming guests of honor at his ranch, often sending them home with gifts. On this occasion, President Khan left with a saddle, three Texas-style hats, a pair of spurs and a hunting jacket.
The day marked one of several barbecues hosted at the ranch for visiting dignitaries. Typically, barbecues included live music, good conversation and most importantly - food! Frequently on the menu: barbecued beef, chicken, pork, pinto beans, potato salad, pickles and pecan pralines washed down with beer and coffee.
What are you grilling this summer?

On this day in 1835, the Battle of Gonzales was fought, kicking off the Texas Revolution.
The battle was fought near Gonzales, Texas, between rebellious Texian settlers and a small group of Mexican Army soldiers sent to retrieve the town's cannon. At dawn on October 2nd, the Texian volunteer soldiers opened fire on the Mexican camp. After the Mexican Army withdrew, Texians raised a homemade white banner with the infamous image of a black cannon over the words βCome and Take It.β
Although the event was hardly more than a skirmish, Texians declared it a victory over Mexican troops.
