That’s gonna be a no for me dawg…
The dreaded Scope Creep, or when a client asks you for something outside the agreed upon contract [P.S. Always use a contract].
So how do you resolve the above situation?
As filmmakers, working with clients isn’t just about solving problems but managing expectations to ensure a smooth process for all parties involved.
How you handle a Scope Creep will determine how your relationship evolves with a client, so you want to handle it with care and grace.
Remember that you want them to respect you as an expert of your craft and a business owner, so when the above happens your best bet is to refer back to the agreed upon terms of the project and a transparent discussion on the added cost if they want to pursue this addition.
If they respond poorly or don’t respect your time and energy, then ask yourself if this is an ideal client that you would want to work with again in the future.

You are the product you sell…
Video is a service you provide, and solving a client’s problem is the outcome. So take a moment and ask yourself: Do people 𝗪𝗔𝗡𝗧 to work with 𝗬𝗢𝗨? Should they? Do you put your best foot forward when representing yourself and your value to your clients? Can you deliver what you promise?
Remember that most of your job as a filmmaker is to solve problems, and in solving problems you create value. As you improve your ability to solve problems, your value as a creator increases in equal measure.
You are the video expert, when you work with clients know where and how you can improve their business. And how can you improve your ability to do that?
By listening and asking questions!
Find their pain points as a business. Ask questions to get a feel for the source of their troubles, then show them how video can help ease their burden. Your clients are a gold mine of information for you to explore, and there’s always a solution hidden in their obstacles.
And if you know your product (yourself!) well, you’ll know how to make that the solution they need.
Provide value and you will be valued.
As a creative, you have to be a little bit selfish…

“What should I charge?…” -Most Filmmakers
This is the biggest question filmmakers have, and the hardest answer to find.
It feels like so many filmmakers don’t want to talk about how they price their services, either because they don’t want you to know what they charge, or because they don’t even know how they price things or have a system for how they charge.
We get it, pricing can cause a lot of anxiety…
Charge too little? You get overworked and burnt out while still making less than you need.
Charge too much? You can’t land enough clients and No Clients = No $$$$$.

Client Experience is a crucial part of growing your business, retaining clients and getting new ones.
And this goes beyond the basics of just completing projects on time and delivering high quality work. Those things are 100% important, but client experience goes way beyond that.
This is about how you treat your client, how you communicate with them, and the other things that you can provide them during a project.
Your high quality of work may get people talking, but it’s this experience that you provide that really makes your clients root for you and spread the word about you, saying things to their peers like “wow, if you need video content for your business, you gotta work with (insert your name)! They are such a breeze to work with! I usually find plenty of things to complain about but I didn’t have single thing when working with them!”
Providing a high quality client experience results in respect from your client, referrals from that client, and repeat business from that client.
Starting to provide great client experience can one of the biggest game changers for your biz and its future!

Community is the Cornerstone
Three best friends with one goal in mind, community.
Our story begins back in 2007. A couple years into our friendship the exploration into filmmaking was just beginning, and creating projects was our after school activity. We didn’t know it then, but that’s when we started The Video Community.
After high school we branched out across the country to pursue our filmmaking goals. As best friends, all in the same industry, we continued to help each other grow and used our aligned careers as an opportunity to strengthen our friendship while also strengthening our businesses. We were stronger together.
Freelance filmmaking can be a lonely business, over the years the three of us have realized how thankful we are to have each other in our lives. But not everyone has the community that we have, and because of that doesn’t experience the benefits that community offers.
