🚨 STATE OF EMERGENCY: TRUTH UNDER ATTACK 🚨

Banned books are on the rise. History is being erased. Truth is being challenged. Access to knowledge is under siege.

But we’re not standing by, we’re fighting back with truth & access to FREE books.

Join RootzGround & wingzFly for our Teach Truth Day of Action at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center in Harlem at 1942 Amsterdam Ave. @ 156th Street.

📚 Read. Learn. Organize. Mobilize.

Together, we’ll celebrate the power of stories, defend intellectual freedom, and ensure that every generation has access to the books, histories, and voices that some would rather silence.

When they ban books, we open them.
When they erase history, we teach it.
When they spread fear, we build community.

We had an opportunity to witness Harriet Tubman’s Journey to Freedom statue that is traveling the 750 mile route of the Underground Railroad and made its midway point stop in NYC as part of ! We also attended the engaging program at Mother AME Zion Church in Harlem on Memorial Day, where we learned the history of this moving project and heard directly from those involved, including the Menare Project. Thank you for this moving tribute. It was a tangible reminder of the grueling sacrifices made for the historic struggle that was and the struggle that continues.

May I have your attention for a quick minute? How well do you remember this day, six years ago? It was a day the world seemed to stop and pay a little attention- but not much mind - for a quick minute, to acknowledge the systemic brutality that Black men, women, and children confront simply for existing. George Floyd departed this world at the hands of state-sanctioned violence. His breath left his body after 9 minutes and 29 seconds of relentless torture witnessed by the global public soon after being transmitted across the world by way of a phone recording. It was another life violently lost and captured on film with the gut-wrenching audio to cement the pain of what was endured. And for a quick minute, some folks who’d chosen to ignore the long-standing pandemic of state-sanctioned violence affecting Black lives tuned in, left their homes with masks and took to the streets, bought books (many of which have now been banned), finally gave the mic to Black scholars, and sought to educate themselves- if only for a quick minute- about the legacy of intersectional violence against Black and Brown bodies. Sadly, it wasn’t too long before the pendulum swung dramatically in the opposite direction, reducing transformational consciousness to the co-opted term “woke,” intended to be slanderous. DEI soon became the new “scarlet letter” with orgs scrambling to erase all traces. This wasn’t surprising to those of us who had committed to liberation work long before it became a trend. We knew that George Floyd‘s death was bigger than a moment. His precious life mattered and shifted the attention of this world – even if just for a figurative minute- to something bigger, to be accountable to something bigger. Still, we know that Mr. Floyd’s legacy endures beyond the cruelty of his death because he was a son, a father, an uncle, a nephew, a human being who was loved and remains loved for far longer than the fleeting attention span of those who chose to only attend to the emancipatory efforts that his life and the lives of so many others deserve- for a quick minute. We will never forget. We will never stop educating. We will never stop teaching the truth.

Bring your family. Bring your students. Bring your people.
Come build community, reclaim truth, and protect the freedom to learn. Join RootzGround & WingsFly on Saturday, June 6, 2026 for the Teach Truth Day of Action at Sister’s Uptown Bookstore & Cultural Center from 10AM–1PM.
We’ll be giving away FREE books and uplifting the voices they want hidden- books by diverse authors, children’s literature that affirms identity and humanity, and liberatory curriculum rooted in truth, struggle, resistance, and joy.

Because right now, across this country, institutions are working overtime to sanitize history, erase race, criminalize honest education, and disappear the stories of oppression and resistance that shaped the world we live in today.

But we refuse to let them rewrite the past to control the future. Every banned book tells us exactly what systems fear.
Every erased story reveals whose power is being protected.
And every child deserves access to histories that tell the truth and not propaganda disguised as education.

This is bigger than books.
This is about who gets to be seen.
Who gets remembered.
Who gets humanized.
