This month at Austere: Frankie Muriel

Picture this: you’re (trying to) ride a scooter through the streets of Austin after a long day of networking and checking out new artists at SXSW, not totally sure where your next stop is going to be, just hoping it’ll be something good. Then, all of a sudden, you hear these three voices cutting through the noise of the city and the noise of the same electric scooter you are still trying to ride.

We followed that sound into a venue and discovered our favorite set of the entire week:

Next of Kin is a q***r alt-country three-piece delivering haunting vocal layering that holds onto the core of a classic folk sound with a really addictive twist. Something entirely new and something entirely them.

I could go on all day about the impact this group had on us, but the best way to put it is this: we started at the back of the venue and somehow ended up at the very front by the end of the set, not even really by choice. They just drew us in.

Looking forward to following this trio’s trajectory because if they connect with people the way they connected with us, there’s a lot ahead for them.
