A few stills from the music video shoot with for his new single β€œYou Got Me” πŸ”₯ huge shoutout to him for trusting me to bring his vision to life! It was an honor to be a part of this πŸ™πŸ»

A few fun facts about this project:
- we shot this entire video in about 2.5 hours.
- we didn’t use any extra lighting or modifiers. 100% natural light. It presented its challenges but overall gave us a great look.
- to get the underwater shots we put the V-RAPTOR in a fish tank and pushed it underwater. Big risk, big reward.
- pulled it off with just three crew πŸ§πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ§πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
Myself (Director, DP, Editor), steadicam/cam op, 1st (and only πŸ˜‚) AC. Couldn’t have done it without these guys.

Camera: V-RAPTOR 8K VV

SWIPE ⏩️ for a lighting breakdown of this Bible Study Series.

We took a blank, stale office space and turned it into a full on living room 🏠

We started with treating our key light .lighting p300c as if it was a big window. We used the softbox and pushed it through a 1/4 silk to soften it as much as possible. This then allowed us to motivate that light with the window gobo on an .lighting 200x & spotlight attachment coming from the same direction. We bounced another .lighting p300c off the ceiling to give it a little fill on the far side and used a 24x36 black flag to keep the light from spilling too much onto the far wall.

Looking back I would have made a few adjustments but overall very happy with how this turned out and excited to help resource women with this amazing Bible study.

Swipe ➑️ for a super simple lighting breakdown.

Shot on KOMODO 6K with .lighting

Had to travel light for this shoot and the .lighting t2c and 200x came in super handy.

Used the single 200x as the key and used two t2c’s to get some pops of light onto the trophy cases in the background as well as give a little rim/hair light.

Delivered in 1080p so with the 6K from the KOMODO we were actually able to get 2 angles from each camera. Always a work in progress but overall very happy with how it turned out.

Pro Tip: when you see the photographer taking photos of you, start pointing at things.

It makes it look like you actually might know what you’re doing πŸ‘πŸ»

Had a lot of fun as DP & editor on this project πŸŽ₯

Owen, because of your faith, drive, and perseverance, you turned what could have been an excuse into part of your story that is going to inspire so many people. Thank you for sharing your testimony and continuing to be a light for those who need hope. Love you bro.

Ps. Good thing you nailed those jumpers 😜

Had a blast directing this project for a Men’s Night event opener at a welding and fabrication warehouse.

Since we knew the sparks were going to glow warm we wanted to create some contrast with a cool environment. We really wanted the sparks to be the main focus so most of this was done with a single light (usually backlighting) with a couple pops of light in the background. The goal was to give just enough light to show detail but keep it as dark as possible.

It was still pretty bright in the warehouse (we shot around 6pm) the the light leaking through the doors/windows so to give it a nighttime feel we threw on either a 0.9 or 1.2 ND filter depending on the scene. It allowed us to keep the lens wide open and while it made the image a little bit soft at times, I think this style of shoot called for it 🀟🏻

Shoot details:
πŸ”΄ Location: Ober & Sons, Houston TX
πŸ”΄ Camera: KOMODO 6K
πŸ”΄ Lens: Xeen 35mm T1.5 w/Tiffen 1/4 Black ProMist

πŸ”΅ Camera WB: 4600K
πŸ”΅ Lighting Color Temp: 5600K
(I knew the sparks were going to sit between 2800K-3200K so this combination gave us the cooler overall temp in the room and kept the sparks glowing warm)

β€’COLOR CORRECTION & GRADINGβ€’

Just wanted to give everyone a look into what footage starts out looking like and what it ends up as!

TOP: What footage looks like directly out of camera (yeah, it looks awful LOL). In this case, I shot in Panasonic V-Log. Log footage gives a lot of dynamic range and flexibility when pushing around colors in post. It looks terrible but gives a lot of flexibility down the line!

MIDDLE: Rec709 & Correction. In this stage I bring contrast and saturation back to the footage and adjust overall exposure. I also adjust white balance if need be. At this point it could be left alone and look perfectly fine.

BOTTOM: Final Grade. This is where I add some slight color adjustment. You’ll notice this mostly in the plant on the table and his skin. I wanted to push the plant to more yellowish and muted so it wasn’t distracting. It also gives the scene a slighter warmer feel whereas the bright green can make it cooler. He also has red undertones in his skin so l pulled a bit of it out.

Note: this was a screenshot so don’t mind the banding in the shadows. The final footage is band-free πŸ˜…

So, who did it better?

Photos 07/24/2020

First off: I do a terrible job of showing the projects I work on. Definitely not one of my strong suits.

However, being blessed to help produce and edit the weekend services for has taught me more than I could have possibly hoped for. It’s challenged me and helped push me to build up my toolbox of skills. One of which learning how to color and manipulate footage better.

The top screenshot is directly out of camera (shot in V-Log on a EVA-1) and the bottom is colored with a slight complementary scheme to accentuate the blues in the shirt. Crazy right?

God is continuing to bless me in ways that I never would have expected. Here’s to the rest of what has truly been an amazing year so far. πŸ™ŒπŸ»
