Today we remember Tyler Abell, who died September 19 at age 94.

Abell played an important role in the Johnson administration, serving as President Johnson’s first presidential appointee as Assistant Postmaster General from 1963–1967 and later as Chief of Protocol from 1968-69. He was married to Bess Abell, who served as White House Social Secretary during the Johnson administration.

A lifelong steward of Washington history, Abell authored and helped publish several books documenting the lives and stories of prominent figures in American public life, including "Washington’s Iron Butterfly," an oral history of Bess Abell’s years in the White House, and "The Columnist," about his stepfather, renowned journalist Drew Pearson. Additionally, he helped edit “The Drew Pearson Diaries."

Through his public service and his work preserving the stories of those who shaped Washington and the nation, Tyler Abell leaves a lasting legacy.
