NASA is a national treasure with real data and real facts about the most serious challenges our planet is facing. We're about to release our latest film on the palm oil industry, just one of the industries responsible for forest destruction. You can explore this topic and many others at NASA's Earth Observatory. https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/world-of-change/Deforestation

On this Earth Day, we reflect on the past year of work on the Discovery Channel film Expedition Palm Oil.

Today Arrowhead Films joins Southwest Airlines in mourning its founder Herb Kelleher, a great Texan and a great businessman. His impact on commercial aviation is legendary, but one thing many might not know about Herb is that he was the first airline owner to hire Vietnam War veteran aviators. Where others saw war-damaged goods, Herb saw highly trained and successful pilots like Mike Venable and others who could help him build the safest, fastest, and at the time, cheapest "your company plane" airline. Because of this, he was a proud supporter of our documentary "In the Shadow of the Blade," and we were proud and delighted to give him a flight on 091 to a fantastic hangar veterans celebration he hosted at LZ Southwest. Today that helicopter is in the Smithsonian Museum of American History, and this very good man has surely made Heaven a lot more fun than it was before his arrival.
Herb Kelleher Tribute Herb Kelleher was a pioneer in many ways, but especially when it came to hiring Vietnam Veterans when many other businesses turned them away.

The Nature Conservancy protects more than 900,000 acres in Texas. In the Gulf Coast Region, Arrowhead was given access to the Clive Runnells Family Mad Island Marsh Preserve to film for the Bullock Texas State History Museum's exhibit, Becoming Texas. A big thank you to Preserve Manager, Steven Goertz for taking the crew to film in this beautiful preserve! Bullock Texas State History Museum The Nature Conservancy in Texas

Thank you to Texas Master Naturalists, Brigid and Allen Berger, for helping our crew get out to Matagorda Island to capture sunrise and sunset in the Gulf Coast Region. We love meeting Texans like the Bergers, who volunteer to "provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities for the State of Texas." Thanks for the adventure! Texas Master Naturalist Program Bullock Texas State History Museum Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

Arrowhead films would like to thank everyone who made Expedition Palm Oil possible and come alive on-screen. Thank you to the wonderful people from ANJ, Hope for the Forest, and Sime Darby for showing us your practices and experiences with palm oil. Special thanks to conservationist, Erik Meijaard, for guiding us through the trails of production at ANJ. Lastly, thank you UNDP for choosing us to explore and tell the complex story of palm oil, and for sending along Andrew Bovarnick to join our expedition.
Another thank you to our host, Nadine Zamira Sjarief, and the Arrowhead team: Patrick Fries, Daniel DeLoach, Cheryl Fries, Cherie Hart, Mita Hernandez, Max Anderson, and Alexa Bodine.
Bison in Caprock Canyons State Park. The herd began with only 45 bison. Today, there are about 200 as a result of the dedicated staff at the park. They run wild and are unpredictable, but if you're patient and lucky, you get a shot like this. Caprock Canyons State Park

After spending three weeks in two countries, we have finally wrapped on-location filming for the one-hour UNDP documentary for Discovery Asia, “Expedition Palm Oil.” With three camera operators and two drones we captured the lifecycle of palm oil from global producer plantations to the front yards of local villagers. Now, we transition the expedition to the editing room with Ryan Dever. Let’s make some movie magic! A short-teaser is coming soon…

The local children of Sintang were a fan of Daniel DeLoach and his drone as they saw a view of their village from above for the first time.

Today we filmed orangutans in the wild, an increasingly rare sight. Meeting the human demand for palm oil has resulted in the deforestation of hundreds of thousands of hectares of the species' habitat, contributing to their status as critically endangered. We have to admit that our crew shed some tears for these spectacular animals who may not share our planet for much longer.

We’re in Jakarta with Expedition Palm Oil Host Nadine Zamira and Ms. Musdhalifah Machmud, Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, catching the government’s perspective. They say this is not an either/or situation of economic development or forest preservation … that is yet to be determined.
Also pictured is UNDP's Andrew Bovarnick, a leading expert on commodities, and our camera crew: Sutiknyo and Daniel DeLoach, and Director Patrick Fries.

A Project As Big As Texas
Arrowhead Films has been selected by the Bullock Texas State History Museum to produce a large-scale projection contemplative video experience that will take visitors on a travel through time to pre-1821 Texas. This first-floor feature will capture the majestic, unchanged landscapes of seven Texas geographic regions, and the sounds of the languages spoken by the American Indian Tribes and European colonials who called Texas home. We can’t wait to head out into the spectacular wild spaces of Texas to help our state history museum tell “The Story of Us." Bullock Texas State History Museum

Thank you to the Texas Office of Attorney General for choosing Arrowhead Films to make this important documentary, and for hosting a great premiere event today. And thanks most of all to the wonderful people, especially the incredibly courageous survivors, who shared their stories to save others. You can view the entire show here, and learn how you can "Be The One" to stop human trafficking.
Human Trafficking Human trafficking is modern day slavery. Kevin Bales of Free the Slaves defines it as “a relationship in which one person is controlled by violence through violence, the threat of violence, or psychological coercion, has lost free will and free movement, is exploited economically, and paid nothing...

Happy 2018 from Arrowhead Films! As we reflect on the last year and move through our 22nd year of making documentaries that make a difference, we are grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to capture the heart and soul of meaningful, important, and often incredibly sensitive stories in our productions. This month our one-hour film for the Texas Office of the Attorney General Human Trafficking Division “Be the One” will premiere in Austin on the first leg of its journey to teach each of us how ordinary people can recognize, prevent, and report human trafficking and help put a stop to the crime. Last year we also continued to produce programs about the amazing efforts that are underway to protect our planet and build a healthier environment for all of us. Our film "Make Mercury History” - filmed in Peru, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan - premiered in Geneva at the very first Convention of Parties on Mercury. As part of our continuing work to tell the stories of veterans, we debuted “Texas Welcomes Them Home,” our one-hour film about the building of the Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument on PBS this fall. And as the year turns, we are excited to have been selected to produce a one-hour film on the impact that palm oil has on our environment. We’ll be on location in Indonesia and Maylasia this spring and look forward to sharing photos and behind-the scenes content on our journey. A big thank you to all of our crew, staff, clients, and friends, and our best wishes to you for a healthy, happy, and meaningful new year.

All too often, the heroes we've filmed for our military documentaries pass, and we dig into our archives to locate any footage that will bring the family some comfort. With the search called off for the Blackhawk crew that perished in Hawaii last week, I am saddened to report that among the crew was CW3 Brian Woeber whom we filmed in Afghanistan in 2011. On a hot and dusty day of 115 degrees, Brian, a Marine-turned Dustoff pilot, drilled a young group of Marines on how to help Dustoff help them if they were injured. We used a short clip of this in our film When I Have Your Wounded, but here's the entire clip....used with permission from the family. https://vimeo.com/230178565

Coming soon from Arrowhead Films, our new Documentary That Makes a Difference about human trafficking and what each of us can do to Be The One to prevent, recognize, and report it. "It's happening in your backyard."
Same headline, new day Arrowhead Films of Austin, Texas, was seen around town this week filming footage for a new documentary on Human Trafficking, based on the May 1, 2013, Madisonville Meteor headline story “Madisonville Police charges prostitution diva”, as reported by Becky Holland.

And.....THAT'S A WRAP FOLKS! Today we finished principal photography on our documentary on human trafficking. A big thank you to the awesome, compassionate women on the front lines of this fight against modern day slavery. Kirsta Leeburg Melton, the Deputy Criminal Chief of the Human Trafficking & Transnational / Organized Crime Section in the OAG, Andrea Sparks, the Director of the Child S*x Trafficking Team in the Governor's Office, Rev. Denise Barker, the Director and Founder of Magdalena House in San Antonio, and Sgt. Dara Bowlin, Investigator in the Human Trafficking Division in the OAG.

We are in Conroe today filming. A big thank you to, owner Jason and barista Laura for letting us film in and around Conroe Coffee. Very cool shop!

It's human trafficking in small town Texas. If you think it can't happen anywhere, just ask Madisonville Texas. We're here filming today for our documentary on human trafficking.

Arrowhead Films was hanging out on a rooftop this gorgeous Thursday morning capturing some awesome city shots with the coolest drone in town! Director, Pat Fries and Cinematographer and drone operator, Danny DeLoach were making magic.

Arrowhead begins production in April on our documentary training film on human trafficking, Be The One, for the OAG. Yesterday, we were in Madisonville, Texas on a location scouting visit. Madisonville is a lovely small town in the Piney Woods that proves human trafficking can happen anywhere. But as he always does when on location, director Pat Fries, manages to find the charm and the good food.

We saw the first signs of spring in Austin the other day - a commercial for a w**d 'n feed product to get that lush, w**d-free green lawn. Here at Arrowhead Films, we believe that keeping our lakes and rivers clean is more important than keeping our lawns looking good with chemicals and poisons. Lucky for us, the City of Austin feels the same way. A little over 10 years ago we produced this PSA asking Austinites to skip the w**d and feed, because what goes on your yard eventually ends up in our water. The film's a little dated but the message is still something we believe in. Oh, and recognize anyone you know? https://vimeo.com/24986845

Our home town of Austin, Texas has a tradition of lighting up the Zilker Park Christmas Tree each year, which was 11/27 this year. But many years ago, shortly after 9/11, we pitched the idea to change every light on the tree to red, white and blue and to hire a local school choir to sing a patriotic song. It's one of our favorite TV spots from our archives…..enjoy! https://vimeo.com/24986858
