In 2012, the thing that Ruby lacked was a good matrix library. We've got two of those now — MDArray (for JRuby) and NMatrix (for MRI/YARV).

Today, in 2015, the thing Ruby lacks is robust visualization. We have around five libraries, but none of them are finished. We want to make plotting in Ruby as easy as it is in Python.

If you're interested in mentoring, please let us know before this weekend. We've got a very good student application, and an extra slot to accept that student, but no mentor for the slot. It is our organization's policy that it's better to give this slot to a different project than to keep it do a substandard job.

Please, please, please think about volunteering.

Help us send our first female Google Summer of Code student to the GSoC summit this October.

Fact: 20% of software engineers are female — but only 1.5–5% of *open source* software engineers are women. Help us fix that by investing in Magdalen.

Send student coder Magdalen Berns to the Google Summer of Code Summit Editor's Note: Magdalen Berns is one of SciRuby's excellent Google Summer of Code students this year, and we hope that she will one day be a mentor and role model for other young women and men interested in open source software development. We would lo...

Excellent news, everyone! We're a Google Summer of Code 2014 mentoring organization! If you know any students who might be interested in a summer internship working on an open source project, please send them our way.

Ruby Science Foundation (SciRuby) We believe that the time for a Ruby science and visualization package has come. Sometimes when a solution of sugar and water becomes super-saturated, from it precipitates a pure, delicious, and diabetes-inducing crystal of sweetness, induced by no more than the tap of a finger. So it is today with n...

Call for funding: more women needed in open source science software - SciRuby Women make up 51% of the American workforce, and yet only 20% of software engineers are female — and worse still, only 1.5–5% of open source software engineers are female.

Mentoring future computational power women for GCI 2013 - SciRuby 10/25/2013

Did you know that only 22% of software developers are female? It's worse in open source: only 1–5% are women.

We want to use Google Code-in as a mechanism for getting more women involved in scientific computing and open source software development.

Mentoring future computational power women for GCI 2013 - SciRuby My name is Anna, and I’m an engineer and a scientist. I study Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan; and I graduated …
