Our community is bonded like family—the only Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Texas & the Southwest. We are celebrating 29 years!!
Located in East Austin, we preserve Puerto Rican living traditions through monthly cultural events and 10 weekly performing arts education programs. The Puerto Rican Cultural Center (501C3) is the only center in Texas and the Southwest affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture for ongoing cultural programming. Our programs are open to all and attract cultural tourism. We are a community, bonded like Family, under the umbrella of cultural arts and traditions. You must travel to faraway states to enjoy another cultural center like ours! Founded in 1997, our nonprofit mission is to promote cultural awareness and pride through education and events based in folklore, history and traditions -- dance, music, community theatre, ancestral fighting arts, and indigenous Taino heritage! Our East Austin facility is home to Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance (PRFDance), our performing company of dancers, musicians, and juniors. We share Taino culture and living traditions through Yukayeke Yara Cu (Tribe of the Sacred Place) - our Taino yukayeke of blood descendants and Guaytiao (friends).

Since 2001, our achievement and quality have been validated by repeat support by the National Endowment for the Arts, Texas Commission on the Arts, City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities (2011+) and others! Our facility is available for rent for special events.

Join Yukayeke Yara Cu for an afternoon of Casabe making, Areyto dancing, Batu playing, and community as we celebrate the Yuca Harvest in the tradition of our Taíno Ancestors.
For the Taíno people of Borikén (Puerto Rico), Yuca was sacred. It was our principal food crop, a gift that sustained our communities through times of abundance and hardship alike. When properly prepared into Casabe, a traditional flatbread, Yuca could be preserved for many months, helping a Yukayeke endure after hurricanes and during difficult seasons.
The harvest was therefore much more than the gathering of food. It was a time of gratitude — an opportunity to give thanks for the rains, the fertility of the Earth, the labor of the community, and the blessings that sustained life.
In the spirit of our Ancestors, our gathering will open in ceremony led by Kacike Tekina-eirú. Learn how to play the 1,000-year-old ceremonial ballgame of Batu, then continue with hands-on Casabe making, joyful Areyto (ceremonial song and dance), and fellowship beneath the pecan trees of our Batey.
Together we will honor the Yuca harvest, remember those who came before us, and celebrate the enduring traditions that continue to unite our community today.
