Hey guess what, has been nominated for a Webby award! If he wins, I guess that kinda means I do too, since I’ve mixed and mastered the audio for virtually every weekly show he’s released for the past several years. So be sure to vote, bc polls close Thursday April 16 which at the time of this posting is only 4 days away!

I could never overstate how much influence James Gadson has been on my drumming. And while I’m super sad that he has moved on from this earthly realm, it is bringing me a lot of joy to revisit the videos we took during our rehearsals from him back in 2018, when he performed with at a special Funky Sole event.
Many are aware of his drumming, but not as many have heard his beautiful soulful voice, as heard on songs like “What Can You Bring Me” by Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band— the band where he got his start. It was really cool hearing him tell stories from back in those days.
If you’re a drummer, look closely at his sticking for those cool snare fills, and look at how relaxed he is while playing those fast 16th notes on the ride cymbal! To this day I’m still learning from you Mr. Gadson! Thank you 🙏✨🙏

this Sat May 3rd is the Los Angeles premiere! although Sundance was unforgettable, having a show in our home town is going to really special. as the composer I feel so lucky and grateful to be a part of the team for this amazing film, directed by . it’s premiering as a part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, and you can get tickets thru the link in the bio
oh and Bay Area heads, the film will be at CAAMFest opening night, May 8!
if I could describe the film in one sentence, maybe I’d say: Third Act somehow manages to be a biography (of pioneering filmmaker Robert Nakamura, considered the “godfather” of Asian American media), a poignant multi-generational story, and the portrait of a man coming to terms both with both demons of the past and his own mortality—weaving all these themes together in a way that creates something even greater.
hope you guys can make it!
p.s. music playing in this post is by , who has a couple tunes featured in the Third Act soundtrack alongside my original score!
