When it gets in the 3 digits, I demand cactus fruits!!! Not only is it yummy, it is also helps me with my hydration.

I am sorry, not sorry that my owner got a few tiny cactus needles in her fingers😉.
I am worth it!!!

During the summer months, the tortoise gang here drink lots of water and eat, and eat and eat!

If you have any spare produce, please drop some off!! We cannot keep up with our grocery weekly trips.

I recently took a few moments to myself and while I was sipping my coffee, I noticed this industrious bee.
It was such a joy watching her go plant by plant, in order, down the flowerbed.
Such lovely little creatures.

I bottle raised her since she was a week old. Every once in a while she will return and let me scratch her ears.

I do appreciate these moments as I can inspect her goat, her eyes, hooves and everything in between for her health assessment.

The big guy devoured 3 romaines today, plus his carrot and his pear. During the dry summer months we supplement with human produce an d of course, he is a sucker for his cactus fruit and leaves. I place some of his produce in water for a little extra hydration.

If you can space a few fresh lettuce heads or any other kind of fruit/veggies, please reach out. 🙏

Oh Shelby…the joys of getting lunch at your favorite restaurant. The anticipation, heavy breathing, the food stare, the smell, the eating with your mouth open; the BURPING and the stuffing your face….

Frankie gets fresh produce and water every day. He eats with gusto and then asks for more. He gets into the alfalfa hay that we leave out for the deer.

We are currently looking for a wooden den(3 sided box), like the one Shelby has for his upcoming winter nights and fresh PRODUCE!!!

Another day; another bath for this ‘young’ man. His road to recovery will be slow. I am happy with even 1 small mange plaque falling off every time he gets a bath. To ensure that he is not too stressed, I am only giving him the special, medicated baths once a week. He is also receiving oral and topical treatment. When the plaque falls off, the skin underneath is raw and pink. It hurts just looking at it.

He is sharing the enclosure with another oldie.

Porcupines usually stay in rehab for mange for 3-5 months. Even when their skin clears, you have to ensure that the underlying disease is also resolved, so once his skin is clear, we will wait a month to see if anything comes back again, and then we hit repeat for another round of treatment.

We have decided to call him The Grinch for now.

It is Release Day for this beauty. It makes our hearts filled with joy and gratitude that she allowed us to care for her for a few months until her mange had resolved.
Every year we take in 6-7 porcupines and we absolutely love watching them in their habitat.

Our hearts break when we see one that didn’t make it on the road. They move really slow and will curl into a ball if a car approaches. They don’t know to run away. Please watch for them at night. They are precious animals.

They DO NOT shoot their quills, contrary to some belief. If your pup has the quills, it means your pup did not respect to ‘personal space’.
The quills do have little barbs at the ends and pulling them out is painful. If you cut the quill about 3/4 down, air will escape and the barb will loosen.
