May is month! Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.
Meet Ernest. Ernest suffered multi-trauma, that included an acute pneumothorax, pelvic fracture, hemi-thorax, liver and splenic lacerations, multiple rib fractures and a pelvic fracture after a pedestrian motor vehicle accident. In addition, he developed respiratory failure, acute kidney injury and polyneuropathy. He had additional abdominal surgeries and later had placement of multiple drains due to multiple intra-abdominal abscesses. While at Bluebonnet Medical Rehab. Hospital, he showed progressive renal recovery and dialysis was discontinued and all drains were removed. He was de-cannulated and was also treated for neuropathic pain. At the time of discharge, he was on room air, tolerating significant periods out of bed, showing improvement on ability to transfer, wheelchair mobility and was weight bearing as tolerated. Dr. Tempest, Neurologist at TNC, talks about what sets the Tejas Post-Acute Brain Injury Program apart.
Meet Kevin. Kevin traveled through the entire brain injury continuum at TNC. He suffered a TBI and a ischemic stroke. Upon admission to Bluebonnet Medical Rehab. Hospital (BBMRH), he had spastic left hemiplegia with left hemi-neglect, as well as cognitive impairment and gait disturbance. At discharge from BBMRH to the Tejas Post-Acute Brain Injury Program he made significant functional gains. As far as self-care, he was independent with grooming and activities of daily living (ADLs) and was walking 150 feet with contact guard assist. His memory was also improving. At the time of discharge home from Tejas, he was walking over a 1000 feet. He was also independent with all ADLs such as: dressing, grooming and showering. Congrats Kevin on you amazing recovery!

Bridget Bryant, PTA, TNC Clinical Liaison, recently participated in a breakfast grab-n-go at Houston Methodist West in Katy, TX and exhibited at the 4th Annual Houston Methodist Critical Care Symposium at the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.
Margaret Stuart, Director of Clinical Services, Craig Franke, MD and Ed Prettyman, CEO presented a CEU: Addressing Psychosocial and Behavioral Issues in Long-Term Acute and and Rehabilitation Settings: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Therapy Department at St. David's South Austin Medical Center last week.
Meet Brandon. Brandon suffered a severe TBI secondary to motorcycle accident. He experienced left hemiparesis, multi-trauma: right femur fracture, status post open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), facial fractures, abdominal blunt trauma and acute renal failure requiring dialysis. After admission to TNC, his kidney function improved and dialysis was discontinued. His weight bearing restriction on his right lower extremity was lifted. He was decannulated and passed his modified barium swallow and was allowed to start eating. At the time of discharge home, he was on a regular diet and was walking 400' with a rolling walker. He was able to perform all activities of daily living with modified independence and his overall cognition improved. Congrats on your amazing recovery Brandon!

It's ! Meet Jason. Jason was involved in a motorcycle accident and required multiple surgeries. He had extensive abdominal injuries, an exploratory laparotomy and splenectomy. He had significant orthopedic injuries and also had a fracture dislocation of L1-L2 and a T12-L1 fusion. While at TNC, Jason received comprehensive spinal cord rehabilitation. Upon discharge home, Jason was essentially modified independent from a wheelchair level and able to self-manage bowel and bladder and basic ADLs. Congrats Jason on your amazing recovery!
