It is with a very heavy heart that we share the passing of our dear friend, Catherine Jackson. Cat was a gifted athlete, the kindest, most giving person you could meet, and a talented artist.

Please keep Cat’s best friend and long time partner, Scot, and her brother, David, in your thoughts and prayers.

We will forever miss you.

Mountain gravel is quickly taking over as my favorite type of racing, and the Gunni Grinder was about as good as mountain gravel gets! This 120-mile event was easily the longest distance I've ever raced, and wasn't far off from being my longest ride ever. Knowing that, my goal was simply to finish, with a secondary goal of sub-8 hours.

After a chilly roll out to Hartman's, I found myself in the lead pack as we made our way through the sea of sagebrush. The pack slowly splintered and was completely spread out by the time we had finished the first 30 miles. As we descended into Powderhorn and began climbing Los Pinos Pass, I was sitting in 3rd, but began to realize that I might have turned the screws a little too hard, too early. I made a very purposeful effort to slow my roll and stuff my face with @guenergylabs on the ride up the pass. I lost a spot but avoided an implosion, and settled into my pace for the second half.

After a long, lonely descent off the pass, @mtbrane caught me. We would leapfrog each other for the rest of the race, and I appreciated the company on the final hike-a-bike, 100 miles in. I seem to have stopped forming coherent memories at this point, as all I remember of the last 20 miles is the sensation of brake bumps and Byron blowing past me on the final descent. I rolled in for 5th in a bit over 7 hours, snagging the last podium spot, and obliterating my time goal.

While my race was not perfect, it was damn close. I've always had fun with gravel, but I've also always had mechanicals or biomechanicals to deal with. Not the case for The Grinder- the Canyon Inflite was flawless, and I never had to open the "uh-oh" Topeak bag, just the one with Gu and snacks! Big congrats to all the racers- @dave_wiens and @sfanion took top spots in the 60-miler, and former collegiate rival @torbjornroed blew us all away in the 120. Thanks to @racerevolutions for putting on a great event. Can't wait to race this course again next year!
