I feel like y’all will think I’m talking absolute nonsense but I swear, thinking of music in terms of ratios has made so much more sense to me than memorizing what letters make up what scale or this and that. Intervals is where it’s at.
Especially after the last video talking about how sound is vibrations picked up in the air.
In the last clip you can see the string physically vibrating, and then physically vibrating twice as fast. Chords and scales also have set ratios and the further from 1:1, the more tense. The way you play from tension to release, in a smooth (or not smooth depending what emotion you want to evoke!) mathematical way, is what sounds interesting to our ears.
Then there are just recipes for chords and scales where intervals are the ingredients. Memorize the recipe and you really don’t need to know anything other than your home key.

(If you don’t know the backstory I’m an American in Bulgaria right now tracking all the little differences. My husband’s fam lives here, I visit every summer. There’s always something new or haven’t noticed before. I love pointing out that there’s no “default” or “normal” human setting and we’re all products of our surroundings which differ from society to society. Neither is right or wrong, just different.)

I posted this on my personal page and the comments were like actually angry “wah wah but you Americans sell real guns at Walmart in America” that’s not why I think this is funny. It’s funny because at what scale are Europeans sealing their sinks and windows that necessitates a dedicated bin of caulking guns, yet NO CAULK widely distributed in a large chain of quite small grocery stores?
I don’t have A gun, let alone many that would necessitate an entire rack.

Hi! I’m in Bulgaria right now for a month like I do every summer and though it’s not my normal content, I thought y’all might be interested.
I’ve been coming here for 18 years now almost every summer and there’s STILL stuff I’ve never seen before or experienced.
Vinca is sort of falling by the wayside anyway so this page will likely turn into more of a “personal adventures” “art projects” “hobbies in progress” type of page.
