Listening isn't just what your ears do.
It's where your eyes are. Whether you nod. Whether you lean in. Whether your phone is face down or still lighting up on the table. Every one of those things sends a message to the person in front of you — either "you have my full attention" or "you're competing for it."
Presence is one of the most underrated leadership skills there is. And in a world where everyone is half-distracted half the time, giving someone your full attention has become genuinely rare.
Rare things get noticed. Rare things build influence.
I didn't have a dream job as a kid. What I had was a standard.
Whatever I do next, I'm going to be better at it than anyone before me.
That mindset showed up early. My brother and I used to sell donuts door to door on Saturday mornings, picking them up warm from the shop, my mom keeping them warm in the oven, running house to house before they cooled down. People answered the door every time. Because warm donuts at 8:30 on a Saturday morning? Nobody says no to that.
But here's what I took from it: the product mattered less than the effort behind it. The tips were bigger. The loyalty was bigger. And I got paid every time I came to collect.
You don't need a perfectly mapped out dream to build something remarkable. You need a commitment to mastering whatever is in front of you right now.
That's still the standard I hold myself to today.

Every excuse feels justified in the moment. But each one quietly hands control of your life to something or someone outside of yourself.
Ownership flips that entirely. It doesn't mean you caused every problem. It means you've decided you're not going to wait on anyone else to solve them.
You can't change everything, but you can change something right now.
That decision, made consistently, is where real influence begins.
I didn't come out of school chasing someone else's blueprint. I came out ready to outwork everyone around me.
Not because I was more talented. Because my parents showed me what it looked like to take whatever you're doing all the way to the final step. That if you finish what others quit on, bigger wins are waiting on the other side.
That's not a complicated formula. But it's one fewer and fewer people seem willing to follow. Everyone wants the results. Not everyone wants to put in what it actually takes to get there.
The willingness to do more and be more than most people want to be...that's still the edge. It always has been.

Most people treat responsibility like something to avoid. It feels heavy. It feels like risk.
But responsibility is actually the opposite of that. It's a lever.
When you own your actions, you gain control over your outcomes. When you stop waiting for circumstances to change, you start having real influence over your own future.
The moment you choose responsibility, everything becomes possible that wasn't before.
The voices around you shape the decisions you make. Especially when you don't yet have a strong enough voice of your own.
Early in my life I didn't have a lot of self-esteem or mentors to push back on bad influence. And it cost me. I made a decision I deeply regretted within weeks because I was spending time with the wrong people listening to the wrong voices.
Who you surround yourself with isn't a small thing. It's one of the most consequential leadership decisions you will ever make — long before you ever have a title.
