Have you ever thought about who protects the professional engineering license?

The Texas Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) is the only active, established organization in Texas devoting its entire effort to the professional, ethical, economic, social, and political aspects of engineering. We protect the license through advocacy and the Political Action Committee for Engineers (PACE), and promote the license through student outreach, education programs like MATHCOUNTS, and scholarships for students pursuing engineering.

Consider joining the TSPE Travis Chapter Board to get involved at the local level. We hold monthly luncheons, National PE Day in August, the Ortega Holiday Party in December, annual Engineers Week Banquet in February, and we participate in PE Day at the Capitol every 2 years during the legislative session - the next one coming up in January 2027! In the Travis Chapter, you'll grow your network, practice leadership skills, and build community. And no--you don't have to be a professional engineer to join!

Jorge brings together service, leadership, and civil engineering expertise to help make Austin one of the most resilient and desirable cities in the country. As Director of the Watershed Protection Department for the City of Austin, he leads efforts to safeguard lives, property, and the environment from flooding, erosion, and water pollution—work that directly protects our community every day.

A former U.S. Army Sergeant of Communications, Jorge values clear, consistent communication and decisive leadership. He earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and later returned to complete an Executive Master in Public Leadership from the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Through his servant-leadership approach and unwavering commitment to employee growth, Jorge continues to strengthen both his team and the community he serves.

Please join us in congratulating our 2026 Young Engineer of the Year – Gaby Vasquez!

Gaby is a Geotechnical Engineer at Black & Veatch, where she supports critical power-sector projects and consistently demonstrates technical excellence, leadership, and professionalism.

Beyond her project work, Gaby is a standout leader in the engineering community. She currently serves as: President of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Austin Chapter;
a SWE Senator; founder and President of Geo-Institute Austin of ASCE; and Secretary for Deep Foundations Institute's (DFI) Women in Deep Foundations Committee.

Gaby is also deeply committed to serving our community through the , volunteering with impactful programs such as Mother's Milk Bank at Austin and Food-in-Tummies.

Gaby’s leadership, service, and passion for engineering make her truly deserving of this recognition. Congratulations on this well-earned honor!

That's a wrap!! After months of planning and coordination, our Travis Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition comes to a close. We want to extend a thank you to our MATHCOUNTS Coordinator, Hope Newton, P.E. for her hard work and dedication to this event. MATHCOUNTS is a math competition for local 6th-8th grade students. This event takes significant planning, coordination, and time, as well as ~50 volunteers day-of.

What makes this even more meaningful is that, while she was dedicating her time to serving these students and the community, she was unable to travel to a conference (2026 ASCE CRYMC) where she was scheduled to receive an award for Outstanding Young Engineer in the private sector.

Her commitment to others, passion for education, and dedication to community service exemplify the very best of leadership. We are incredibly proud of her and grateful for the example she sets.

Thanks also to our numerous volunteers who showed up in many ways!!

Calling all MATHCOUNTS supporters and STEM enthusiasts!

We are gearing up for the 2026 MATHCOUNTS Travis Chapter Competition, and volunteer coordination is officially underway.

The Travis Chapter Competition simply wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of volunteers. This year, we’re looking for at least 50 day‑of volunteers to serve as graders, proctors, and registration support.
