Bummer Year turns 4 today. Come hear it front to back Monday, April 20th at , along with a few extras from the same era. Free show, doors at 7. First night of our three-week residency.

April 8th is a loaded day for us. It’s the day this record came out after many years of trying to make it exist. We had just played our first ever sold out show that night at , and a couple hours later I got the phone call that Jake was at the hospital. He’d been hit by a car and had a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury.

I’m so grateful for how it all unfolded from there. Jake made a complete recovery, and honestly a pretty fast one. And the Austin music community came through in a big way with the GoFundMe, which made a really hard moment a lot more manageable. We’ve never forgotten that.

We recorded Bummer Year in August of 2018 in Dripping Springs at , with Dan Duszynski. Our drummer Phil had been in the band for exactly two weeks and had barely learned all the parts. Jake, Anastasia Wright (our bass player at the time), and I had spent a furious couple of weeks getting him up to speed.

Just as we were getting ready to put the record out on in 2020, Covid hit. While certainly not the greatest tragedy of that era, it was a total gut punch. We decided to wait, not really knowing how long it would be. I’m so glad we did. Bummer Year brought us so many incredible things: our first review, our first serious US touring, getting to play , and so many other incredible festivals and venues.

Thanks for listening and for being here. We love y’all.

By now I’m hoping you’ve heard about our upcoming Chicago show at with this Saturday, March 7th.

I’ve posted on Instagram. I’ve made stories. I’ve run ads. I’m sending emails to the list, so if somebody says that they didn’t know that we were playing, I’m going to fight them.

Go buy your tickets right now at the link in our bio. Or else, you’re dead to me. Not really. I love you. ❤️❤️

A little story about the picture above: this was from the second time we ever played in Chicago. Our really drunk friend was insisting that we had to take this picture, and I really didn’t want to stop what we were doing to do it. We ended up using it for a lot of press photos and all kinds of stuff. So thanks, Ira. That was the right call.

I’ve been hosting these song hangs at my house for the last 9 or 10 months. It started out weekly, then shifted to every other week.

When we got back from Europe in September, we didn’t have much on the calendar. I realized I needed to write songs for another record. Not sure how it happened, but I hadn’t written a song in a year and a half, maybe two. Touring and the business side of things are totally at odds with the creative process. I have to live in my left brain to get that stuff done.

Europe was incredible, but it cost us a lot of money. The shows and festivals were great, but going over four times in a year put us in quite a bit of debt. I realized we wouldn’t be able to climb out unless we had another album to tour and sell. But I didn’t want to write from a place of fear or needing money.

So I started this song group with the intention of writing a new song every week. That was the only rule. If you’d like to see the model, google Jack Hardy’s Songwriting Manifesto. We meet at 7pm for a potluck, hang for an hour, then share new songs from 8 to 10. Anybody is welcome, but only those who have written something new can share.

It has been transformative. I’ve been surrounded by incredible songwriters and a community creating beautiful art just for the hell of it. It worked. The pressure switched to not wanting to disappoint my friends. Mostly I’ve had a song every week. Sometimes half a song. Sometimes nothing. Even the nights with no song led to inspiration as I listened to everyone else.

Just really grateful for the last nine months. I wanted to let you guys in on the process
