At a time when there were very few women scientists, Nobel Prize winner and nuclear physicist developed a way to measure various biological substance concentrations in the body. Originally used to study insulin levels in diabetes, this technique also measures hormones, vitamins and enzymes – all previously too small to detect. Without the contributions of Yalow and her collaborator Solomon Berson in the work of accurate hormone measurement, it was impossible to diagnose various hormone-related conditions and endocrine diseases like type 1 diabetes. Despite its huge commercial potential, Yalow and Berson refused to patent the method so that all could benefit from their work. Learn more here: bit.ly/4bAFI8P

With recent deadly opioid overdoses in Austin fentanyl is back in the news. What is fentanyl and why is it so deadly? Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine. There are two types of fentanyl: pharmaceutical fentanyl and illegally made fentanyl. Pharmaceutical fentanyl is prescribed by doctors to treat severe pain, especially after surgery and for advanced-stage cancer. Cases of fentanyl-related overdose are linked to illegally-made fentanyl, which is distributed through illegal drug markets for its he**in-like effect. It is often added to other drugs because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous. Read more about Fentanyl here: bit.ly/3QMIj7l
