Fun with Chemistry

Fun with Chemistry is a science outreach program provided by the Department of Chemistry at The University of Texas at Austin.
The program makes chemistry come alive and fosters interest in learning and discovery for students of all ages by participation in hands-on activities. We demonstrate fundamental principles of chemistry through explosions, liquid nitrogen ice cream, the production of slime, instant snow, and other fun activities. Our outreach events can inspire students to focus on science and pursue a career in a chemistry-related field.

Good afternoon everyone! On this day in 1884, the first long distance phone line between Boston and New York was inaugurated using Alexander Graham Bell's recently invented telephone. This was the first line to use copper wiring instead of galvanized iron; copper has a greater attenuation of signal, creating a stronger connection. The wires carry electrical currents from one point to the next, which is just electrons moving through the wire. While today's cell phones use a different form of signal, Bell's breakthrough (and use of chemistry!) paved the way for the global connection we share today!

Happy Women’s Day everyone!
Today we are highlighting Dr. Flossie Wong-Staal, a molecular biologist and UCLA graduate who, with her colleagues, identified HIV as the cause of AIDS while researching retroviruses at the National Cancer Institute in 1983. From there she went on to be the first scientist to clone the HIV virus in 1985! She played a critical role in mapping the genome of the virus, which was immensely helpful in the creation of HIV diagnostic tools.

Double the Thundercloud, Double the Fun!!
The Women in Engineering Program - The University of Texas at Austin put on an event called and fun with chemistry was able to be a part of it! Over 8,000 people came to the event and were able to participate in over 150 activities! In case you missed the event please check this video out to see our finale!!
