Picture it: you’re building your ideal custom home...
Which features do you add? Do you want a “hidden” pantry? Extra square feet? What about a closet as big as a bedroom?
For this home renovation, we were able to build a dream closet to showcase a Nike shoe collection. As you can see from the picture, it’s not just any shoe collection!
We worked closely with architect Edward Frierson and designer Betty Shaw as well as our various trade partners to build custom cabinetry and a mirrored ceiling effect so that the eye does not truly know where the collection begins/ends. A spectacular photo from Paul Bardalgy captures the magic of a custom master-peice!

What does custom mean, anyway?
Have you ever been to one of those "custom" airbrush vacation shirt kiosks? The shirts are advertised as custom but the only part you can “customize” is putting your name on the shirt. You do not get to choose the type of shirt, the color scheme, or the background image.
In contrast, we love showcasing this fireplace because it represents the exact opposite of that air-brushed t-shirt experience!
In order to complete this home renovation project, we needed to tear down the home that was already on the lot. The only issue? The home was the current homeowner’s childhood home. The solution? Use the bricks from the exterior of the home to build this fireplace!
So what does custom mean? In this case custom means no other homeowner will have this fireplace- it is truly one of a kind!

To jet or not to jet- that seems to be the question for bathrooms these days!
You might have noticed a lot of trends from the 80’s coming back in design: the use of browns, natural wood cabinets, marble, black bathroom fixtures, arches (see previous post), and even brass (albeit with a flat finish). The 80’s trends we are not seeing come back? Jetted tubs.
The claw foot tub took over in popularity a few years back and the stand alone tub in bathrooms has become the statement home owners are opting to make in their primary bathrooms. And what a statement they make! In this primary bathroom from a home we finished building last year, the exquisite design from Wheelhouse DesignWheelhouse welcomes you right into relaxation.
The simple updates for bathrooms these days? Paint over that millennial grey and trade out a jetted tub for a stand alone soaker tub. Want to get even more on trend? Try out a cold plunge tub or a Japanese soaking tub.

Arches are back! We loved teaming up with Amity Worrel & Co. to make her designs and the homeowner's wishes a reality. And the reality is: arches are trending! From kitchen nooks to hallway transitions, adding an arch to your home is a simple way to refresh your space.
Simple but not easy, arches take quite the craftsmanship to build. Initial measurements will include tracing out the pitch of the arch on two pieces of plywood. Once measured and cut, you will need to cut wood blocks and space them out inside of the plywood in order to hold the two pieces of plywood together. Using paint grade jams made to be uniform in order to match the correct pitch of the arch, add the wood jamb and clad the arch in oak.
In this particular design, the arched jamb was constructed of layers of plywood that have been cut out with the same pitch as the framing. All the layers make up the depth of the jamb. The layers are adhered and then in this case they were veneered on the finish side to cover up the edge of the plywood. Same process can be achieved for a stain grade application. Sounds easy enough, right?
Making difficult things look effortless is what custom home building is all about! We can't wait to see where the arch trend will take us next.
