Childcare is not a luxury, it’s essential infrastructure for working families, thriving communities, and our economy. When childcare is unavailable, families are forced to make impossible choices and workplaces feel the impact. Childcare professionals deserve meaningful support, fair investment, and recognition for the critical work they do every day. Families deserve accessible, affordable care they can count on.

Join us for A Day Without Childcare Advocacy Day and help make it clear: childcare matters. Your presence sends a powerful message to lawmakers that Texas families and educators need action now.

📍 Texas State Capitol
🗓 Monday, May 11, 2026
⏰ 11:00 AM–12:30 PM CT

Show up. Speak out. Stand with families and childcare educators.

We're celebrating Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week until May 10th, and today is World Maternal Mental Health Day🌸

According to the World Health Organization, maternal mental health challenges affect nearly 16% of pregnant individuals and nearly 20% of postpartum women & birthing people. When left untreated, severe maternal distress can greatly impact a parent’s well-being and daily functioning and can also affect a child’s healthy growth and development. The good news is that maternal mental health conditions are treatable, and with the right support, recovery is possible.

This is why the MHEC ecosystem provides families with culturally grounded, trauma-informed mental health support through a combination of direct therapeutic services, non-clinical support, and trusted referral pathways. We also provide access to therapy and counseling for our staff and contractors through shared EAP benefits, while fostering a culture of wellness by promoting mental health days and advocating for rest, recovery, and overall emotional well-being.

Need help? Join any of our member organizations for access to free mental health services.

MHEC was forged out of necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure Black birthing people have access to equitable perinatal care in Central Texas. What began as a place to build power and advocate for Doulas and Birthworkers to remain in the hospitals led to an internal needs assessment to analyze current services and understand the gaps in care for perinatal folks in our region. With support from , we conducted a BIPOC lived experience survey to gain further input on community need. From this, the Perinatal Childcare Program for Black Families, along with other efforts of Reproductive Justice, was born💪🏽🫶🏾

We are re-envisioning what community care looks like to eliminate racial inequities in maternal health outcomes.
