making interpretive dance music.

Feel very fortunate to have been raised in a home with a piano, and two highschool band directors for parents. I’m told they often had headphones playing the likes of Aaron Copeland, Chopin and Debussy to me while I was in the womb.

Also recall many Friday nights spent in the stands at football games with the marching band. Feel it all helped me foster a love for mathematics & geometry very early on.

Here’s a clip of a fave recording I’ve shared some of once before, tho was scared of leading with the point at which my voice enters, so here it is.

Cheers,
Aaron

Grateful + excited to share a reminder that I’ll be performing at this October 16th!

Honored to share a bill with many musicians I’ve looked up to for years, such as Koan Sound, Zebbler Encanti Experience, Ekorce, Detox Unit (to name a few, tho the list goes on)

————————————

I often think of the set that led me to connect with the Astronox crew.

It was my first post-covid performance + would be my first time to play keys live, as well as to use the full rig I’d assembled during that time.

It would also be my first time sharing what I’d written during covid, which was quite different from what had come before. A crush I’d written one of the pieces for would also be there.

I was terribly anxious about all of this + wasn’t able to sleep for 2 days before the show.

Fighting for sleep on the day, I took some CBD at 2 + 8am. When sleep still didn’t come, I took a sleep aid, which ended up interacting with the CBD, yielding numbness in my fingers + global lag I’d associate with being drunk.

Given I still needed to pack my gear into my car + drive 2 hrs to the venue, I became distressed I wouldn’t be able to make it + went so far as to dial the organizer’s phone to admit as much.

Not sure what stopped me, but I hung the phone up + pushed thru. Packed, drove, played, and afterward, Nick came up to tell me he hadn’t seen a better set in 5 years + that he wanted me to play his fest that October.

Sharing this bc my life would be so different had I turned away + I came very close to doing so. There are so many friends I’d not have made.

Never fear being seen to try and fail. Fear not living.

Sharing highlights + BTS from ’s and my debut interactive dance performance for + .

I was + remain overwhelmed by how well this went despite facing many challenges. Wishing a huge thank you to my friend + collaborator Laura for pushing thru with this, despite her appendectomy 2 weeks preceding, which prevented us from being able to rehearse sooner than the day before. Also for her patience while I fought to get + to talk to one another without crashing.

Wishing another thank you to all who gave us your time to attend + for your enthusiasm in speaking with us after. It’s been a dream to do this for years + I cried when I got home.

Last tho not least, to my friends and colleagues + for your enthusiasm and time in helping us facilitate this experiment. Very excited for future iterations. Stay tuned for more + much love.

a few notes on interactivity:
- her position in the room influences whether notes in my chords would play altogether or be strewn apart.
- each step she takes randomizes my visuals’ color-palette, displacement map structure + style, as well as occasionally bypasses the kaleidoscope stage.
- her hand-heights control the octaves my melodies play in, while also altering their timbres, and run my delays thru reverb.
- the space between her hands address many points in my visuals (depth of displacement for one) as well as alter articulations in many synthetic elements.

On April 22nd, l’Il be joined by my friend Laura Price to debut a new interactive performance. Through dance, she will dynamically shape both my visuals and music, an innovative live performance that melds creative mediums.

This will take place at AET’s Lab for Immersive Media (LIM), where Qualisys mocap will transduce her movements to real-time data for use in , which our audiovisual show is driven by.

Showtimes are at 7:00p + 8:30p. Should you wish to join us for our experiment, check the link in our bios to RSVP for free!

Big love to our friends at UT School of Design and Creative Technologies, dadageek + dadaLab for their support in facilitating this project.

Not entirely sure why this didn’t get shared to the page. It meant the world.

Xuiqen is a local IDM composer we hired because his set brought us to tears at a local Defunkt show. He will be opening for Richard Devine as a part of the live IDM takeover on the schedule.
