Meet carista_labelle Carista Asonganyi — a producer redefining what’s possible in Cameroonian cinema. 🎬✨
Carista is a Cameroonian producer and audiovisual creative who stepped fully into filmmaking around 2020, turning passion into purpose. Starting from the ground up, she immersed herself in film sets, learning every aspect of production and embracing her natural role behind the scenes.
She made a strong debut with Half Heaven, a bold project that went on to achieve a successful theatrical run in Nigeria—a rare milestone for a Cameroonian film.
Now, she’s raising the bar even higher as the producer of her second feature film, Lights Out, set to hit cinemas across Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, and the USA this April.
Carista represents a new generation of women in film—fearless, intentional, and forward-thinking. Her journey is a reminder that women are not just part of the industry—they are leading it.

🎬DOES WINNING AWARDS ACTUALLY PAY IN CAMEROONS FILM INDUSTRY?
When Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor at the 2026 Oscars for his stunning dual performance in Sinners, something predictable happened. His price went up. The Hollywood star is now reportedly asking for $18 million for the upcoming Miami Vice reboot. Nobody blinked. That’s simply how the game works in a mature film industry: recognition translates to value.
But here in Cameroon, we have to ask ourselves an uncomfortable question — does winning an award make you more valuable, or does it make you unemployable?
Walk through any film circle in across the country and you’ll hear the whispers. An actor wins at XYZ Award ceremony, or gets recognized at a regional African film festival, and suddenly… the calls slow down. Not because their talent is in question, but because producers assume they’ll “price themselves out.”
Directors who’ve screened at FESPACO or won at Ecrans Noirs sometimes find themselves waiting longer between projects, not shorter. The award sits on the shelf. The phone doesn’t ring.
This is a paradox that quietly suffocates our industry.
In Hollywood, Nollywood, and even the Ghanaian film scene, an award is leverage. It attracts investors, opens doors to better scripts, and signals to the market that this person is a proven asset. The award doesn’t inflate ego, it inflates opportunity.
In Cameroon, the infrastructure to convert recognition into opportunity simply isn’t strong enough yet. There are no agents negotiating on behalf of award-winning talent. There are no studio systems ready to bid competitively for their services. Most productions still run on tight informal budgets where “award winner” reads less like an asset and more like a liability.
The result? Our best talents either migrate. Chasing markets that reward excellence or they shrink themselves to stay relevant locally.
Awards should be the beginning of a conversation about value, not the end of one. Producers need to see recognized talent as an investment, not a threat to the budget. And our award-winning creatives deserve the confidence to know their craft has market worth.
Because if we keep treating excellence like a burden, we will keep losing our best people — and our industry will keep running in place. 🎥
What do you think? Do awards open doors or close them in the Cameroonian film industry? Drop your thoughts in the comments 👇

Meet Koryn Bessong— breaking barriers in Cameroon’s film sound department. 🎧🎬
Ingrid Bessong is a boom operator (perch-woman) and sound technician, one of the few women working behind the scenes in one of the most demanding and male-dominated areas of filmmaking.
Her journey wasn’t linear. After studying Microbiology at the University of Yaoundé I and briefly pursuing nursing, she explored different paths—from digital marketing to entrepreneurship—before discovering her true calling in sound. In 2019, she enrolled at the IFCPA/CRTV, where she trained in audio and audiovisual techniques. What began as curiosity quickly turned into passion.
Her entry into cinema came when she worked as an assistant on Kankan by mr_joseph_akama. From that moment, she found her place in the film industry. With the support of mentor minyemjulesserge Serge Minyem, she gained hands-on experience and steadily built her career on set.
She has since worked on several productions across the sound department, including:
• Melchisédech – Sound Assistant (dir. alain.bomo Alain Bomo Bomo)
• Sadrack – Sound Assistant (dir. Narcisse Wandji)
• Destinée – Boom Operator (dir. gerardnguele Gérard Désiré Nguele)
Working in sound requires precision, endurance, and invisibility—balancing with camera, lighting, actors, and movement—all while capturing the perfect audio. It’s a tough role, but exactly the kind of challenge Ingrid thrives on.
Today, she continues to grow in the industry, with ambitions to become a Production Sound Mixer and eventually lead her own team.
Ingrid Bessong is proof that no space in filmmaking is off-limits to women—and that even the quietest roles can make the loudest impact. 🌍✨
