Singing in community harmonizes our hearts and helps us feel present, connected, and at peace
This song found new meaning this year.
“Dreary Day” was already about weathering the storms life hands us — but singing it during our Summer Solstice ritual, so close to the anniversary of the July floods here in Texas, it became something else. A container for grief. A way of naming what still aches without looking away from it.
And today, on the 4th — I know not everyone is in a celebrating mood. For some of us, this day sits heavier than fireworks and flags. This song is for that too.
“Dreary Day” will be on my forthcoming debut album, Impermanence — a tribute to my father and to everything that doesn’t last, which is everything. 🌾 That’s what these rituals are for — gratitude, yes, but also honoring the pain, so we can keep going forth together.

Happy Juneteenth. Happy Summer Solstice Eve. Happy Father's Day! Happy Pride too! What a weekend to be alive. 🌻
On this Freedom Day, we celebrate as a way to nourish ourselves in knowing that freedom is possible — and then we return and renew our commitments to liberation for all.
So tomorrow we gather to sing, to invoke joy, beauty, and freedom. Songs that set you free, remind us that joy is our human right, with beauty and freedom woven into every voice and every verse. These are songs that belongs to all of us or to none of us.

That's why we sing. 🎶
As Summer Solstice approaches, the longer days have a way of inviting not just rest, but reflection. Summer in Texas means long hot days and swimming holes, although this year feels a bit different with all the rain we've been getting. And apparently it also calls for some deep personal reckoning. Who knew?
Over the years I've received ongoing feedback that my circles are predominantly white—and it's true. This isn't unique to Heart Body Song; it reflects the segregation baked into our city and our society. Community singing is a form of collective healing—but healing can't be fully realized when the people most harmed by unjust systems aren't present or aren't safe.
I am a white woman learning—imperfectly and continuously—how to show up better. I don't have this figured out. What I can offer is a genuine commitment to keep learning, keep listening, and keep showing up.
Some concrete steps I'm taking:
