I’ve been doubling down on my creative practices lately to recover from the overstimulation of SXSW, balancing a full life and the bait of social media.
Here are some tried and true and some new practices I’ve added to my creative routine. Feel free to add one, some, or all to your toolbox.
What are some creative practices you have incorporated in your life that keep your cup filled & your brain sane? Share them with me so I can try them out, too 🩵
Day 1 of ✅
I had the chance to attend the Civic Creator Convening hosted by Austin Current during SXSW week here in Austin.
It was an invite-only gathering of creators, journalists, and storytellers thinking about how people engage with civic and local news and how that engagement is changing.
One of the conversations that stuck with me most was about how storytelling might reach the people who have completely checked out of political news.
Not everyone wants policy breakdowns, headline summaries, or triggering content. But many people will still lean into a story. Something human, narrative-driven, and grounded in lived experience.
It made me think a lot about the role creative storytellers play in the civic ecosystem. Writers, poets, filmmakers, and digital creators aren’t just making art, but we’re often translating complex realities into something people can actually feel and understand.
I left the room with new connections, a notebook full of ideas, and a lot of curiosity about how storytelling can rebuild trust and attention in the civic space.
Grateful for the thoughtful conversations and for spaces that prioritize dialogue over panels.
If you’re pulling up to SXSW, let’s connect 🩵
p.s. I am having a writers meetup on Tuesday, 3/17 at Daydreamer Coffee on Rainey St.
