Introducing my wig to my actual hair for the first time. It went fine. 💁🏼‍♀️

Two weeks ago: wig. Today: glasses, and an entire conversation about alter egos, because a Vistage chair noticed I looked different, said so (when I asked), then said it wasn’t his business why, and left it there. No interrogation, no eyebrow raise waiting for the real story.

Ten minutes later we’re deep in how many versions of ourselves we build depending on the room. He also handed me two books that might be my new favorite leadership library: “Don’t Be a F*cking Dick” and “You Don’t Know Sh*t: The Joy of Bewilderment.” Accurate on both counts.

Being seen isn’t about the noticing. It’s about what happens after.

He didn’t say a word about the wig. Either he didn’t notice, OR he did and said nothing. Which one is worse? 👀

In my experience working with leaders, the second one is more common than we think. We notice things like shifts in someone’s energy, appearance, behavior… and we say nothing. We tell ourselves it’s polite. Professional. Not our place.

But silence in leadership isn’t neutral. It’s a choice. And over time, those unspoken moments are exactly what erodes trust, connection, and psychological safety on teams.

I’m giving a talk to C-suite leaders on “The Science of Happiness” on July 8th. I can tell you, the research is clear. People don’t need perfection from their leaders. They need to feel seen.
