Building Austin's first light rail.

07/27/2026

Austin Light Rail is a huge project that will require collaboration across dozens of stakeholders and partners.

One of them is Stadler, who we’ve selected to build Austin’s light rail vehicles. They’ll be building with all of Austin in mind, to deliver a system that’s accessible to everyone.

Now that they’re on board, we’re set to keep things rolling. Read more: https://www.atptx.org/milestones/atp-selects-manufacturer-for-austin-light-rail-vehicles/

We’ve selected Stadler as the manufacturer for the trains for Austin Light Rail and are beginning the design process.

Stadler’s CITYLINK vehicles feature spacious, modern design with large windows, low floors and seamless platforms, creating a train that’s accessible for all.

And the best part? The public gets a say in design — from color schemes and seating to accessibility features and wayfinding — as we build a system all of Austin can be proud of.

On June 12, ATP Board Chair Veronica Castro de Barrera joined CapMetro at the ribbon cutting for the new Rapid 800 and 837 bus lines — a Project Connect promise delivered. We're not just talking about public transportation. We're delivering it.

This launch shows that when Austin sets a bold goal, and we work together, we can turn vision into reality. Proud to keep showing up for Austin alongside our partners at CapMetro. Watch the FOX 7 story for more: https://bit.ly/43DWT7e

We're building the light rail so that it can be expanded in the future. That means it will be able to grow as our city grows, making it a vital connector when it opens and long into the future.

Q: Who will ride Austin's light rail?

A: All Austinites. It’s not just for people who live near a station. Austin’s light rail is being intentionally designed to connect to other modes of transit too — including the commuter train line, buses, bicycles, and even cars through park-and-ride options at key stations. So whether you live right Downtown or one of Austin’s suburbs, it will be a fast and affordable way to get to places and events in and around the heart of the city.

We’ve officially started preconstruction with our new construction partners. 👷 This is one of the final steps before we begin building. Teams from our local construction partners have begun surveying and inspecting the ground where we will build, using LIDAR, drones, and boring equipment. This early work will help keep the project on track and avoid costly delays.
