Dedicated rail will deliver faster, more predictable trips through the city’s busiest corridors any time of day.
Q: Who will ride Austin's light rail?
A: All Austinites. It’s not just for people who live near a station. Austin’s light rail is being intentionally designed to connect to other modes of transit too — including the commuter train line, buses, bicycles, and even cars through park-and-ride options at key stations. So whether you live right Downtown or one of Austin’s suburbs, it will be a fast and affordable way to get to places and events in and around the heart of the city.

We’ve officially started preconstruction with our new construction partners. 👷 This is one of the final steps before we begin building. Teams from our local construction partners have begun surveying and inspecting the ground where we will build, using LIDAR, drones, and boring equipment. This early work will help keep the project on track and avoid costly delays.

The light rail will also add miles of new pedestrian and bike paths — including a new bridge path across Lady Bird Lake.

When we build the light rail line, we’ll also build new and improved sidewalks for pedestrians in places like South Congress.
Q: Will Austin's Light Rail help with traffic?
A: With great growth, comes great traffic. The light rail will not wave a magic wand and fix all our traffic problems. But because it doesn’t have to sit in traffic like a bus or a car, it will help reduce travel times to key destinations in the heart of the city. That means you’ll be able to cross the the river at 5 p.m. again!

Light rail is good for locals. It's also good for Texas businesses — more than 2,000 companies across Austin and the state have the goods and services needed to compete for contracts that will build Austin Light Rail.

ATP has selected Kiewit Austin Partnership (KAP) — a joint venture between Kiewit Building Group Inc. and Austin Commercial — to design and build Austin Light Rail's Operations and Maintenance Facility.
KAP combines world-class infrastructure experience with local expertise you know well, from Q2 Stadium to Circuit of the Americas. This is the team that will build the place where Austin Light Rail's trains are maintained, cleaned, and prepared for service each day.
