It’s 2026 and Texas Parks and Wildlife has no idea if there’s a hundred, a thousand, or ten thousand mountain lions in our state. They don’t know if populations are stable, increasing, decreasing, bursting at the seams, or on the brink of collapse.
I believe that should change.
For the first time, TPWD is finally considering taking a meaningful step to understanding mountain lion distribution, age structure, and looking at trends over time through mandatory harvest reporting. Harvest reporting is standard practice for mountain lions in other states and is widely supported in Texas for other species like desert sheep, along with deer and turkeys in some counties. If passed, it will provide crucial data to monitor and understand this iconic species. It’d finally solve the mystery of where they’re at and how they’re doing, which is increasingly important as both South and West Texas are rapidly fragmenting and getting developed.
If you agree that TPWD should monitor mountain lions using a commonplace method to ensure they always roam South and West Texas, please take a minute to hit “Agree Completely” at the TPWD comment page:

Austin Alvarado joined Jack Humphrey to talk about the making of Borderlands Jaguar.
From guiding rivers in West Texas to filming wildlife in the borderlands, Austin shares what it takes to work in remote landscapes. Weeks in the field, long hikes, and the patience required to capture what most people never see.
The conversation also explores the human side of conservation. How former hunters became protectors, and why lasting change depends on trust, relationships, and community.

In 2018, we traveled 1200 miles along the Texas-Mexico Border to document the Rio Grande before the construction of a wall and to show the potential impacts on wildlife, communities, and landowners. We produced a film called “The River and The Wall,” which premiered at SXSW. The journey took several months, traveling by mountain bikes, horses, and canoes.
Since that journey, a wall has been constructed through much of the Lower Rio Grande Valley, most of the stretch between Del Rio and Laredo, and is now being planned for portions of Big Bend. As lovers of wildlife, rivers, and the border, it’s been unbelievably disheartening to see the wall constructed through landscapes we hold dear, especially at a time when immigration numbers are at a fifty year low and technology exists that doesn’t require demolishing the landscape. Although there have been indications that a physical wall won’t be constructed through the State Park and National Park, there’s a lot of uncertainty and contracts have already been awarded to begin construction in some regions.
The Rio Grande is a vibrant wonderful river that unites two countries. It flows through the our largest public lands, and it’s landscapes are quite simply irreplaceable. We did our best to showcase the Rio in the film, but it doesn’t compare to being there in person. If you’ve never been, go! Have lunch in Mexico, paddle the river, stare at the stars, laugh with your friends, and camp in the canyons.
We’re excited to announce “Borderlands Jaguar” will be screening at March 21! Q&A following the screening with Cholla Rose from the
For eight months, our team filmed Libélula, the matriarch of the Northern Jaguar Reserve in Sonora, Mexico. The movie takes a deep dive into the history of Jaguars in the United States and their potential to return.
We’re grateful to share this story alongside filmmakers from around the world and shine a light on binational conservation opportunities.

RIP David Bamberger.
You inspired millions of people to better steward our water and wildlife, taught busloads of schoolchildren about the importance of grasslands, and will forever be a legend of Texas Conservation.
56 years ago David bought “the worst land in the Texas Hill Country” and spent the rest of his life improving the soil, restoring grasslands, recovering wildlife, and most remarkably: bringing springs, streams, and creeks back to life. His land ethic has spread throughout “The United States and Texas Too” and has inspired millions of acres to be managed more holistically.
He didn’t keep the land to himself. He opened the gates to thousands of people, all the local schools, and scores of researchers, campers, and organizations. Eventually, David gave the 5,500 acres of land to future generations by placing the ranch in a trust to be forever conserved by the non-profit Selah, Bamberger Ranch Preserve.
Our team was deeply impacted by David’s story and we produced this short film “Selah: Water From Stone” nearly a decade ago. Since then, it’s received over 6 Million Views across the world, a testament to the conservation hope that David spread throughout his life.
Please continue his legacy by following , making a contribution to their non-profit, and seeking ways to restore habitat and recover wildlife in your own life.
And don’t forget to stop, pause, and reflect on everything around you.

This was our holy grail for camera trapping. It took eight long months to get footage of these incredible animals, and we’re beyond excited to share them with the world! Congrats for this incredible moment, and to the researchers at the for conserving, studying, and helping us film these magnificent big cats.

Behold the Borderlands Jaguar on Apple TV, Prime, and digital platforms.
The thrilling 52 minute adventure film follows wildlife cinematographers Austin Alvarado and Ben Masters on a quest to document the elusive species and show the importance of conserving wildlife corridors along the U.S.–Mexico border. The stakes could not be higher. A rapidly expanding Border Wall has been constructed on three out of every four miles in Arizona, New Mexico, and California, threatening to sever the potential for the jaguar’s return to the United States and halt the flow of wildlife at a continental scale. To achieve their mission, Austin and Ben seek the help of a legendary Arizona houndsman, a jaguar hunter turned conservationist, and researchers at the Northern Jaguar Project in Sonora, Mexico. They discover the matriarch of the reserve, Libélula, a twelve year old Jaguar whose cubs could potentially migrate to the United States. For eight months they film Libélula, with the dream that her story can help stop further construction of a border wall and inspire increased conservation efforts in the wild, wonderful, shared ecosystem of the U.S.–Mexico borderlands.
