My name is Jimmy Counihan and I’m running for First-Year Student Government Representative.

I want to work for you, my fellow longhorns, to enact real change on campus.

The longhorn community is strongest when all longhorns feel like they belong. I want to work to ensure marginalized communities have a seat at the table and non-traditional students feel more connected to campus. I want to increase representation and expand funding for equity and inclusion related agencies. Additionally I want to bring transfer and non-traditional students back into the fold by working to strengthen the Transfer Student Agency and making an opt-in directory for CAP students so they have a community of people with similar experiences.

Safety and Mobility are of upmost important to me, and this campaign. I want to work to ensure that all longhorns feel safe on campus which is why I want to work with the city of Austin, the University, and housing developers in West and North campus to expand the police blue light system off campus where students are likely most vulnerable. Additionally, surewalk wait times during peak times can be an inconvenience. I want to increase funding for sure walk to expand capacity.

Scooters, while instrumental in campus mobility, should not clutter our university. I want to create no park zones for scooters to ensure they aren’t in the way of pedestrian foot traffic. Many students bike to campus and out bike racks are being over used. I want to build additional bike racks on campus to ensure bikers don’t have to search for places to leave their bikes.
