Marjorie Halloran
Marjorie Halloran is a synesthetic singer, songwriter, and composer of choral and chamber music.
She blends contemporary harmonies and colors with lush melodic lines to create works where all voices have equally important roles (even altos!). Marjorie Halloran is a singer-songwriter and composer originally from the San Francisco Bay Area. Her passion for vocal music shows up not only in her classical/chamber/choral works, but also in her pop songwriter works, in the form of rich vocal harmonies and multiple vocal parts.

PSA: TELL COMPOSERS WHEN YOU PROGRAM THEIR PIECES, it makes us happy and excited and often we don't know unless you tell us. (Even better if you have a recording to share!)

✨ Today's composer spotlight is on Marjorie Halloran who wrote “A Man Said to the Universe” for our Offbeat Concert “Fire, Water, and the Air We Breathe” at KMFA Classical 89.5 NEXT WEEK, on October 26 & 27th. Reminder: Buy your tickets at firewaterair.planningpod.com!
Q: What should the audience listen for in your piece?
A: Listen for the existential dread that comes from the repeated lines, as the choir tries to drive the audience (and themselves) crazy 😂
Q: Why do you love Inversion?
A: I love that Inversion prioritizes NEW music by living composers, and amplifies marginalized voices when possible-- so many ensembles are still stuck in "old dead white guy" mode, even ones that claim to be modern and diverse.
Q: Share some music recommendations!
A: Choral music: I Hate and I Love (Dominick Argento), They Are Mother (Jennifer Lucy Cook), Mass for Double Choir (Frank Martin), Luminosity (James Whitbourn) and literally anything by Joshua Shank and Timothy Takach || Songwriting: The Weepies, Regina Spektor, Step Azernov, Jo-Hannah Reynolds, Dawn Clement
Q: Do you have a woman composer you admire and if you do, why?
A: I think Melissa Dunphy is amazing, I am such a fangirl of hers. She's an incredible composer, smart AF, and also a really fun person to hang out with, and her podcast, The Boghouse, is fantastic. If you don't already know her music, you should check it out. I also adore Abbie Betinis, Mari Esabel Valverde, Joan Szymko, Diane Moser, and I of course have to give a shoutout to the inimitable Alice Parker of blessed memory, under whom I had the great honor of studying composition several years ago.

Humans are complicated. We created fire, music, and the internet, but we can’t remember where we put our car keys five seconds ago!
On October 26 & 27 Inversion will present Fire, Water, and the Air We Breathe. Through music, we’ll look at human existentialism - our triumphs, our struggles, our desire for community, and our hopes for the future. The concert features several brand-new works for choir by Inversion’s own composers and is a collaboration with acclaimed local percussionist Jordan Walsh. The music on the program is among Inversion’s most inspiring and crowd-pleasing of all time, so don’t miss it!
Inversion is proud to present Fire, Water, and the Air We Breathe as part of the KMFA Classical 89.5 Offbeat Concert Series in the KMFA Draylen Mason Music Studio. Tickets at link at https://firewaterair.planningpod.com/
