Black maternal mortality rates are a public health crisis we cannot ignore. In the United States, Black women are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from childbirth than white women. This is unacceptable and needs to change.

We must address the systemic racism and discrimination that contribute to this disparity by increasing access to healthcare, addressing implicit biases in healthcare providers, and promoting equity in maternal healthcare.

As individuals, we can do our part by advocating for policies that prioritize Black maternal health and supporting organizations that fight for reproductive justice. We can also educate ourselves and others on the issue and take action to dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate it.

Black maternal health is a matter of human rights, and we all have a role to play in ensuring that every Black mom has access to safe and equitable pregnancy and childbirth care.
