Process or Punishment?

Have you ever caught yourself asking, “Why is this happening to us?”

An athlete gets injured. A coach finally feels like the roster is complete… and then players leave. A season doesn’t go as planned. A door closes just when you thought it was opening.

In those moments, it can feel like punishment.

But what if it’s actually the process?

The process isn’t always comfortable. It’s where resilience is built. It’s where leaders are developed. It’s where we learn to adapt, trust, and keep showing up when things don’t make sense.

We don’t always get to choose what happens to us. But we do get to choose the meaning we give it.

So the next time you’re tempted to ask, “Why me?” try asking, “What is this preparing me for?”

What challenge in your life turned out to be part of the process instead of a punishment?

Is there a way to protect the innocence of youth sports?

Today, I’m feeling especially grateful for everyone in my children’s lives who helps make sports possible—the family members who show up, drive the miles, rearrange schedules, cheer from the sidelines, and support them in ways big and small.

Youth sports have changed so much. The cost, the travel, the time commitment, private lessons, year-round training—it’s more than one person can manage. And our family is absolutely part of it. We’re in it, and we love it.

But I still wonder: How do we hold on to the wholesome part of sports? How do we make sure our kids still experience joy, kindness, friendship, teamwork, and a genuine love for the game—not just pressure to compete, specialize, and keep up?

I don’t have the answer, but I’d truly love to hear from other families. What do you do to protect the joy and innocence of sports for your children?

Some days, the pressure just feels heavier.

You put on your favorite playlist. You call a friend. You go for a walk. You try to breathe. You use every tool you know… and somehow, nothing seems to help.

Those days happen to all of us.

One hard day doesn’t mean you’re failing. It doesn’t mean you’ve lost your resilience. It doesn’t mean the tools don’t work.

Sometimes your mind and body simply need a little more time.

It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to rest. It’s okay to say, “Today is just hard.”

Give yourself permission to wake up tomorrow and try again. Put the music back on. Reach out to someone. Journal. Move your body. Pray. Breathe. Start over.

Progress isn’t about feeling strong every single day. It’s about choosing not to give up on yourself when you don’t.

Tomorrow is another opportunity. 🤍

This is what using your platform with purpose looks like.

Lauren Betts stood on one of the biggest stages in sports and chose to speak honestly about mental health—not as something separate from achievement, but as part of what makes achievement possible.

Athletes are often praised for pushing through, staying tough and carrying the pressure quietly. But real strength can also look like protecting your peace, asking for help and allowing someone to walk beside you when things feel heavy.

This is why these conversations belong in sports. Supporting the person underneath the athlete doesn’t take away from performance. It creates a stronger foundation for it.

Thank you, Lauren, for showing young athletes that they can be ambitious, successful and honest about what they’re carrying.

I recommend this conversation because it gives a simple, powerful way to understand how our thoughts shape the way we feel, respond and move through life.

What stood out to me most was the reminder that we do not have to believe every thought we have. We can pause, examine it and choose a healthier direction.

I especially recommend it to coaches because the way they respond to mistakes, pressure and setbacks can influence how athletes learn to think about themselves. Coaches are not just shaping performance—they are helping shape the inner voice athletes carry with them.

Question for every coach...

Do you have the resources that truly help you:
• Build a stronger team culture?
• Navigate difficult conversations?
• Support athletes through confidence, stress, and setbacks?
• Develop leadership?
• Take care of your own well-being, too?

If not, what do you wish you had?
We’re listening.

As Nui Sport continues to evolve, we’re committed to building alongside coaches—not making assumptions about what they need. We believe the best solutions come from the people doing the work every day.

So tell us...

What’s one resource, tool, training, or type of support that would make the biggest difference for you and your team?
Drop your thoughts in the comments or send us a DM. Every conversation helps shape what comes next.

Because the better coaches are supported, the better they can support their athletes.

Quick question for coaches:

If you had 5 minutes with your team before a big game, what’s the ONE mental performance tool you’d use?
