As we gather around the table this holiday season, we’re thinking about these unique family secrets (seriously, what is the secret ingredient in those mashed potatoes?) and considering ways we can ensure that these family recipes are preserved for future generations.

So how can you contribute?

✨ Gather external sources and make a timeline. Maybe even create a map of key locations. External sources include photos, footage, papers, documentaries, books, memorial websites, and so forth. Gather everything you can that connects with your family's life. For example, is your grandfather still alive? His spouse? His children? Any friends or their descendants? Reach out and see if there is anything more to learn.

✨ Document, save materials, and know that you may be creating an archive that answers questions for yourself and your descendants.

Organizing digital photos can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be! Here are our top four tips to take the edge off:

📸 Aggregate all media, cloud storage, and scanned photos into one place.

📸 Create master folders, sub-folders, and standardize all folder and file naming as you work your way through

📸 Fill in any important metadata (name, location, date, format, occasion, etc)

📸 Back up all media into three places

If you do this this on a regular basis it will take less time and you'll always know your digital photos are organized and accessible!
