Hopper managed to save her, and the incident drew the attention of a young Dr. Brenner. Instead of letting the truth spread, the government wiped their memories and erased every trace of what happened. That’s why, according to the theory, they never recognized Henry later and why they walked into the Dimension X in Season 1 with so little fear. Deep down, it wasn’t their first time… just the first time they remembered it.
