September is National Kinship Care Month, a time to recognize the grandparents, relatives, and close family friends who step forward to care for children when their parents are unable to do so.

Kinship care can provide more than a safe place to live. It can help children maintain critical connections to family, culture, community, and a sense of belonging during periods of tremendous change.

At Miracle Foundation, we believe every child deserves to grow up in a safe, stable, and loving family. Recognizing and supporting kinship caregivers is an important part of building child welfare systems that strengthen families and help children thrive.

This month, we honor the caregivers who step up for children and the families whose love and resilience make a lasting difference.

Sometimes the people who understand the importance of family most deeply are those who know what it feels like to be without it.

After losing her mother, Sandhiya and her siblings spent part of their childhood in institutional care.

Today, she is helping other children and families.

Her own experiences taught her that children need more than just food, education, and shelter. They need someone who listens. They need connection. They need family.

Sandhiya has now worked with around 50 families, helping them understand their challenges and connecting them with resources that can help.

Her story reminds us why social workers and frontline professionals are so important to our mission.

Because behind every stronger family is someone willing to listen, understand, and help.

Randi brings more than 15 years of experience in marketing and communications across nonprofits, museums, universities, and consumer brands. She’s a storyteller, strategist, designer, and big believer in using creativity to help people connect with causes that matter.

Outside of work, she loves making large-format screen prints, photography, exploring new places with her family, and visiting just about any museum she passes.

Randi lives here in Austin with her husband, two wonderfully energetic kids, and a whole crew of pets.

Most people think the orphan crisis is about children with no parents.

It's not. 80% of children living in institutions have a living parent.

The real crisis is family separation, driven overwhelmingly by poverty, not abandonment. A family that can't afford school fees or medicine is too often told the "solution" is to give up their child to an institution.

At Miracle Foundation, we believe removal should be the last resort, not the first. Our work is built around one goal: keeping families together whenever it's safely possible.
