Meet the artist:

Who the hell and what the hell is behind Outer Woods?

To try and give a short answer, my name is Tanner, and Outer Woods is my dream, my baby. It’s a high end, custom woodworking company located in Austin, TX, and as we continue to grow, I hope that it organically becomes synonymous with a lifestyle brand encouraging people to be the best versions of themselves, living the best lives possible.

I went to school for and started my career as a biomedical engineer. I wanted to solve problems, I wanted to build things, I wanted to be creative and analytical at the same time.

Call me impatient, maybe say that my head is in the clouds, but as I went down the path of a product development engineer in the orthopedic implant industry, I didn’t feel like I got to do those things.

I also had this insatiable entrepreneurial bug…

So I came to this conclusion: why should I spend all my working hours doing something I wasn’t thrilled about all in the name of developing someone else’s dream just so that I could make a comfortable salary?

And thus, Outer Woods was born. An adventure where I got to develop and company and a lifestyle brand that was 100% in line with my own personality. Wild. Robust. Courageous. Bold. Authentic. Funny. High quality. Empathetic.

I think this picture with me backpacking with my partner and a llama sums up a lot of the emotions and feelings I want to be associated with Outer Woods. Our pieces are one of a kind, our experiences are unique and authentic, our pieces are a tribute to the beautiful and bold natural world. The adventure is wild.

I don’t know, you can disregard everything I said here also and just fall back on this fact. Our pieces and furniture aren’t fake and mass manufactured by robots. They are hand crafted by this fellow that you see in this picture. The person. Not the llama. We have offered this llama a job many times, but he wants to be an attorney. The best candidates are the hardest to acquire.

These pieces originated from a relatively common problem amongst homeowners and interior designers, and we were able to implement a seemingly uncommon solution.

Does this problem sound familiar to you?

“We are homeowners and we are wanting to get some new furniture for our house. Our interior designer has pulled a few options, and we like their ideas, but the specific pieces aren’t right for us. The wood isn’t pretty enough and it doesn’t feel authentic, the materials for the sofa table don’t fit our aesthetic, and the sizes of everything aren’t appropriate for our space, can you help?”

Upon looking, it was apparent that the wood selection from these big box stores was pine, just dyed to look nice, and the pieces were mass produced with no eye for the appreciation of the actual wood used.

As a small business, obsessed with trying to honor the craft of true custom woodworking, obsessed with the natural beauty of authentic and real wood, and obsessed with trying to deliver quality lifelong pieces for our clients, we were able to implement a solution to their problems.

First we used real walnut wood, not stained pine, no veneers, real authentic hardwood. Next instead of using planks of fine walnut, we took it to the next step and we used one slab of walnut to produce all the cuts of wood you see in this set. That does 2 things, first, there are no joint lines, no glue up lines, the grain is 100% continuous and flowing. Second, it makes all the wood parts of these pieces perfectly match each other since everything came from the same tree.

Just as importantly, we were able to design and create these pieces to the exact shape, size, and aesthetics that the homeowner and their interior designer wanted.

Don’t let the simplistic design fool you, this table has quite a few details that make it unique!

This table is called a Chabudai, which is a traditional Japanese piece of furniture and is meant to be clean, robust, solid, and elegant at the same time. The detail that produces that aesthetic comes from 12/4 thick white oak. A phenomenally thick cut of a classically beautiful species of wood. The trick is having the tools and the experience to shape this difficult to work with wood into something void of imperfections. Clean joint lines. Completely flat faces. Perfect angles.

It was a pleasure to design and hand craft this piece, and we look forward to custom making coffee tables like this for many more clients and interior designers to come.

Fox is an Outer Woods brand ambassador. She proudly wore the logo as she absolutely tore up the 14er: Mt. Sneffels.

Backpacking with a dog is a wonderful experience, it adds new challenges, creates new opportunities, and presents another personality to enjoy.

Biggest takeaways from this trip with Fox:

1) just like use, dogs need conditioning to ensure their stamina holds up on a tough hike.
2) keep your dog on a leash even if they are well trained. Their are a lot of marmots and chipmunks that can cause a dog to bolt and potentially get injured.
3) While at each campsite, bring a runner line, tie it between two trees, thread it through your dog’s leash, then they have more ground to walk around.

What feelings and thoughts are behind the mountains of Outer Woods? For us there are the initial obvious ones: quality, hard work, attention to detail, perseverance, things that surround how we approach woodworking.

However there’s a second list that we hope to exhibit through the actions we take outside of the sawdust: a feeing of adventure, new experiences, and a focus on living an interesting and fulfilling story to the best of your abilities.

The chopper and the block. What a couple of gifts these two made this holiday season, a pure walnut end grain cutting board, and a high carbon steel knife from accompanied by a pecan handle from .

This pair, when use together, will aesthetically impress anyone in the room, but the real magic comes from the functionality.

A high carbon steel knife used on the forgiving end grain wood orientation with stay sharper so much longer than stainless steel on plastic boards.

What came first, the Boss or the Desk?

On one hand, someone can rise up through the ranks, have a command over their craft, become ~The Boss~, and feel like, “I deserve a battle station worthy of my accomplishments.”

On the other hand, one could be but a young, hungry, tenacious dreamer, and feel, “I’m going to be ~The Boss~, and I’ll show everyone all about it.” Maybe the desk is the push they need get where they want to be earlier, even if that’s not the status they have right now.

Which one describes your journey?

A White Oak, End Grain, Cutting Board to remember. While the mesmerizing patterns that you see are only possible because of the natural beauty of the wood fibers, they’re only observed because of deliberate and practiced ex*****on. The patterns you see were no accident.

This dining table/gaming table was crafted for a family new to Austin out of Seattle and made for a warm Texas welcome 🤠.
A little bit about the piece:

🪵 The live edge top is divided into 4 separate leaves that can all be removed to reveal the gaming surface.
🪵 Live edge table top is made from 2 book matched Mesquite slabs that were over 100 inches long.
🪵 This particular customer piece is very unique, as it is very rare for mesquite to grow that big and produce such massive slabs.
🪵Table top was connected by a winding river of 8 gallons of black resin.
🪵Gaming section is made from black walnut fine lumber.
🪵 Charcoal felt lines the playing surface.
🪵 Custom welded legs imported from North Carolina.
🪵 Excitingly, the largest Outer Woods piece to date!

Kicking off the new year with a surprisingly unique piece.

Guanacaste wood otherwise known as monkey pod, this tree was from Costa Rica from two trees that fused together early on it it’s growth created 3 inch thick slab coffee table with metal leg accents!
