Challenging the post-concussion vision "wait and see" approach, new research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine reports that office-based vergence/accommodative therapy with movement (OBVAM) significantly outperforms simple observation or “watchful waiting.”

The CONCUSS randomized clinical trial offers significant findings in the area of concussion-related vision rehabilitation. Here's a summary and analysis of its key points:

The trial evaluated the effectiveness of immediate vs. delayed OBVAM in treating convergence insufficiency resulting from concussions.

Immediate OBVAM was more effective than delayed intervention.

The study provides the first high-quality clinical evidence supporting office-based vision therapy as a treatment for concussion-related convergence insufficiency (CI).

Each semester, our office partners with Midwestern University to provide externship opportunities to fourth-year optometry students. These individuals have a very thorough foundation of vision care and are a great asset to the vision therapy community. They will soon be practicing as primary eye care professionals with an additional understanding of the importance of functional vision.

Externs assist in implementing treatment activities with the supervision of our developmental optometrists.

In honor of Labor Day, our office will be closed on Monday, September 1. We will reopen on Tuesday, September 2. Wishing everyone a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend!

Dr. Lindsey Stull and Dr. Ryan Edwards recently had the opportunity to speak to physical therapy students at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. Their presentation focused on the critical role of vision rehabilitation in the recovery process for patients with concussions. As Fellows of the Optometric Vision Development & Rehabilitation Association (FOVDR), Dr. Stull and Dr. Edwards highlighted evidence-based strategies and interdisciplinary approaches to support improved outcomes for individuals recovering from head injuries.
