I’ve been coaching softball for more than 50 years. I believe I’ve made all the mistakes possible as a parent, a grandparent and as a coach. It took me too long to understand what was important. I was that tough parent pushing my kids. I was that overindulgent grandparent tolerating bad behavior. I was that competitive coach where everything was about winning. I wish there were more people in my life that shared their life experiences to save me from some of my mistakes. Softball is an opportunity to learn how to fail, learn life skills and create lifelong memories. Stay positive. Girls must feel good to play good. Set a great example. Treat everyone with respect and kindness. Yes, that includes the umpires! Support your volunteer coaches who devote so much time creating an environment that allows your girls to grow. Cheer for your daughter’s teammates as much as you would for your own. Every success her friends have will become a part of her success. Allow her to feel the joy of being part of something bigger than herself. There is one phrase that you cannot say enough. “I love to watch you play”. Saying this frees your daughter to take chances and grow. It gives her permission to make mistakes and still feel the joy of the game. 50 years from now all you will have left are the memories. Make them cherished memories. For all the girls I’ve known over the years, I just want you to know that “I Loved watching you play!”
