MD3 (Drs Wong, Klein,Pieh) were at Augusta Fire helping teach a range of airway skills at their annual Airway Skills Day. We reviewed difficult intubation, use of video laryngoscopes, surgical cricothyrotomy in adults, needle cricothyrotomy in pediatrics and more. Honored to be asked to take part in educating an excellent crew of seasoned medics!

Kudos to Ally Gosselin, Mid Maine Technical Center's EMT of the Year! She is flanked by Chiefs Flannery and Frost of the Waterville Fire Department, where she is an EMT intern this year, as her award details are read by paramedic Abigail McMahon, her EMT instructor (and MD3 Board of Directors member). Ally was honored with the 9/11 Scholarship and was the silver medal awardee at the Maine State EMT Skills Competition. She plans to start the SMCC paramedic program while participating in the live-in program at Raymond Fire. We could not be more proud!

The decision to manage a patient's airway in the field requires a calm assessment of physiology—hypoxia, hypotension, and acidosis. Dr. Klein broke down the management of patient airways in a recent MD3 Rounds. Free course at: https://rounds.md3maine.com/enrol/index.php?id=4

This week is National Volunteer Week, a time to recognize the essential spirit of service throughout Maine. In many towns across the Kennebec Valley, neighbors rely on volunteers to be there in their moments of greatest need. Whether in Rome, Belgrade, Sidney, Oakland, or another town your neighbor might be the one saving your life. MD3 is honored to work alongside the dedicated volunteer Fire & EMS crews who answer the call day and night. Thank you for your service.

Minutes matter. ⏱️ Would you know if someone was experiencing an opioid overdose? Look for the "Blue & Slow":
* Blue lips or fingernails.
* Slow or stopped breathing.
* Unresponsive to shouting or shaking.
* Pinpoint pupils.
If you see these signs, call 911 immediately. Want your community group or organization to be trained in recognizing these signs? MD3 is ready to help!

April is Alcohol Awareness Month. As EMS physicians, we see the downstream effects of impaired driving first-hand. It's not just about the legal consequences; it's about the life-changing trauma. Please, plan your ride home. We love our community and want you safe..

EMS PEARL | The "Goal" of Narcan
Naloxone is a tool, not a cure-all. For the EMS clinician, the goal of administration isn't a patient who is awake and oriented—it’s the resolution of apnea and hypoventilation. 🫁 Over-titrating can lead to acute withdrawal, vomiting, and pulmonary edema.
