Today, we were honored to welcome Corey Rogers, executive director of the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History, for a special Juneteenth educational session at Doctors Hospital.

Corey shared Freedom by Another Name: The Many Observances of Emancipation, an engaging presentation on how African American communities have commemorated emancipation, celebrated milestones of freedom and carried forward its lasting legacy through generations.

Thank you, Corey, for helping us learn, reflect and celebrate this important part of our nation’s history. We are grateful for your time, insight and meaningful connection with our colleagues and community.

This week, we’re celebrating Patient Care Technician Week by recognizing one of our incredible colleagues: Afton Bryan, lead patient care technician in the Doctors Hospital of Augusta Emergency Department.

Afton began her healthcare journey in high school in North Carolina, where she became a certified nursing assistant and discovered that caring for others was the path she wanted to pursue. She started at Mission Hospital in Asheville in 2020 before transferring to Doctors Hospital in Augusta in January 2023 through the HCA Healthcare network.

Since joining Doctors Hospital, Afton has grown into a leadership role in the emergency department. She says her team helped her build confidence, sharpen her skills and become a stronger leader. She also shared that some of her best friendships have come from the relationships she has built at Doctors Hospital.

For Afton, being a PCT means meeting each day with compassion, teamwork and a readiness to help patients during some of their most difficult moments. She loves that every day brings something new — and that she has the opportunity to connect with patients and help them feel cared for.

Her next goal: becoming a nurse. Afton plans to use HCA Healthcare’s tuition reimbursement program as she works toward her nursing degree — another step in a career rooted in service, growth and giving back.

Please join us in thanking Afton and all of our patient care technicians for the meaningful work they do every day.

Our larger network, HCA Healthcare, is made up of approximately 316,000 colleagues united by a singular mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States—but the warning signs aren’t always what you might expect. ❤️

While chest pain is a common symptom of a heart attack, some people experience more subtle signs such as shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, fatigue, or pain in the back, shoulders, jaw, or abdomen.

That’s why Dr. Faiz Rehman, board-certified cardiologist with Doctors Specialists Cardiology, encourages everyone to listen to their bodies. If something feels different or “off,” especially if symptoms appear suddenly, don’t wait to seek medical attention.

The good news? Many forms of heart disease are preventable. Knowing your risk factors, managing conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, staying active, and making heart-healthy choices can go a long way toward protecting your heart.

If you need a cardiologist, Dr. Rehman and the team at Doctors Specialists Cardiology are here to help you take charge of your heart health.

Our trauma outreach representatives spent the morning at the Evans Market sharing summer safety tips and visiting with members of our community. ☀️

With temperatures reaching dangerous levels across the CSRA, it’s important to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

Heat can also contribute to serious injuries and emergencies, including dehydration-related falls, burns from hot pavement and playground equipment, bicycle and recreational injuries, and motor vehicle crashes caused by fatigue and heat stress.

If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, confusion, or fainting, seek medical attention immediately, as these may be signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to learn more about staying safe this summer. We’re proud to serve and educate our community both inside and outside the hospital.

A child can suffer heatstroke in just minutes inside a parked vehicle — even on a day that doesn’t feel dangerously hot.

Thank you to Dr. Vijay Nagpal, Emergency Medicine Medical Director at Doctors Hospital of Augusta, for sharing this important reminder as part of the “Look Before You Lock” initiative. Dr. Nagpal explains how quickly temperatures can rise inside a vehicle and why a simple habit could save a child’s life.
