Therapy Thursday Thoughts

Large studies show recreational runners have lower rates of knee arthritis compared to sedentary individuals. A physical therapist can help guide you. Source: Cohort study, Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy (Alentorn-Geli et al., 2017).

Many athletes return to sport when their pain improves. Successful athletes return when their capacity improves.

YOUR HA INJECTION WORKED.

Now for the uncomfortable truth...

Your knee doesn't care how much your pain improved.

Your knee cares whether it can tolerate load.

Many athletes return to activity based on symptoms.

Successful athletes return based on capacity.

An injection may help reduce pain.

Physical therapy helps restore:

✓ Strength
✓ Control
✓ Power
✓ Load Tolerance
✓ Confidence

The goal isn't a knee that feels better.

The goal is a knee that performs better.

Pain Relief ≠ Capacity

Don't confuse symptom improvement with recovery.

Why It Works Wednesday

Doing too much at once can leave your body feeling worn out later. Physical Therapy can help you learn how to pace your activities, balance movement with rest, and build stamina over time!

Most rehab doesn’t fail from lack of effort—it fails from mistimed loading.

Too little stress keeps tissue from adapting. Too much, too early, keeps it inflamed and reactive.

Healing isn’t “rest vs load.” It’s precision dosing of load across phases of repair.

When you match stress to biology, you don’t just reduce symptoms—you change tissue capacity.

Dose the load. Respect the phase. Drive the adaptation.

Posture is an important consideration—but it is only one piece of the movement puzzle.

Many people spend significant energy trying to achieve "perfect posture." While posture can influence comfort and loading strategies, research has shown that pain and function are influenced by many factors, including strength, mobility, activity levels, stress, sleep, and overall health.

Rather than focusing solely on maintaining one position throughout the day, we encourage patients to:

✔ Change positions regularly
✔ Incorporate movement breaks throughout the day
✔ Build strength and endurance
✔ Improve tolerance to everyday activities

Whether you're sitting at a desk, working in the yard, or enjoying recreational activities, movement variability is often beneficial.

The goal isn't perfect posture—it's creating a body that can comfortably handle the demands of daily life.
