In this video, the team behind the Fall 2026 Bright Spark® Invention Challenge explains why they're asking students to design what comes next.
Their point is simple: in design, the most valuable input comes from the person actually using the thing. The driver in the race car. The pilot in the jet. And on a playground, that's you. GameTime has been building play spaces for nearly 100 years, and they want students to help shape the next century of them.
Your invention could be a swing, a slide, an entire playground, a game, or a technology no one has thought of yet. What matters is that it works for your friends, your family, your teachers, and people of all abilities.

You've probably already played on a GameTime playground. This fall, students get to design what comes next. 🛝
We're partnering with GameTime for the Fall 2026 Bright Spark® Invention Challenge, and here's the question we're putting to students: How might we design outdoor spaces at your school that everyone can enjoy, even your family and teachers?
GameTime has been building playgrounds for nearly 100 years and is looking for the next great designer to tell us what's next for outdoor spaces at schools. Is it even a playground? Is it something no one has thought of yet?
Here's how it works:
🔍 Find a problem in your school's outdoor space
💡 Brainstorm, then pick your best idea
🔨 Build a physical prototype and test it
🎥 Pitch it in a 90-second video
The details:
🆓 Free to enter, virtual start to finish
🎒 Open to students in rising 4th through 12th grades
👥 Enter individually or in teams, led by an adult
📅 Challenge runs October 5 through 30
🗳️ Public voting November 4 through 11
🏆 Virtual awards ceremony November 18
Awards include Best Overall by Age Level, Most Creative, and Best Prototype sponsored by GameTime.
⏰ Registration closes at midnight on September 28. A ticket is required to compete.
